Could the Wars in Ukraine, the Middle East and Taiwan Merge Into One Global Conflict?

US magazine Newsweek has published an article examining the risk that several existing conflicts could converge into a single global war, arguing that the war between the United States and Iran began as a regional confrontation with worldwide economic consequences.

Although the conflict may remain contained within that framework, the article warns of a darker possibility: a sequence of decisions that may each appear rational and logical when taken individually by major powers could collectively lead to an international catastrophe.

Under the headline, “Good Lord, It’s the End of the World! Why 5 Conflicts Could Turn Into One Global War”, writer Dan Perry argues that unresolved or potential flashpoints including Ukraine, the Gulf, Yemen, Lebanon and Taiwan could begin reinforcing one another until every major power finds itself engaged across several fronts simultaneously.

Such global tension, he writes, could reshape the strategic calculations of Russia, China, Europe and the United States in ways that produce overlapping and interconnected escalation.

Perry warns that the world is passing through a dangerous moment in which multiple wars and disputes intersect. While they may appear separate on the surface, each carries the potential for broader escalation that could eventually lead to a major international confrontation.

What Does History Tell Us?

Perry argues that history does not show world wars always beginning with a clear and deliberate decision by a major power. Instead, they often emerge from accumulated crises, miscalculations, intertwined alliances and relatively small incidents that spiral beyond control.

He sees elements of the current international environment as resembling some of the conditions that preceded the major wars of the 20th century.

Among the most serious sources of concern is the Russia-Ukraine war, the largest military confrontation in Europe since the Second World War.

The continuation of fighting between Moscow and Kyiv, increased Western support for Ukraine and repeated friction between Russia and NATO all increase the risk of a direct confrontation between Russia and European states.

In this context, Perry argues that the possibility of war between Russia and Europe can no longer be dismissed as a remote scenario.

European countries are rebuilding their defence capabilities, while Moscow has intensified its military rhetoric and regards NATO expansion as a direct threat to its security.

As the war in Ukraine continues, the risk of miscalculation remains, particularly in areas close to the borders between Russia and NATO members.

Middle East Conflicts Add Another Layer of Risk

In the Middle East, Perry argues that multiple overlapping conflicts are adding another layer of instability.

Tensions between Israel and Iran, along with unrest in Gaza, Lebanon, Syria, Iraq and Yemen, have created a complex network of indirect confrontations involving both regional and international powers.

Any major escalation between the principal powers involved could draw additional actors into a broader conflict.

Perry also examines the intensifying competition between the United States and China, particularly over Taiwan, the South China Sea and advanced technology.

He argues that one of the most dangerous scenarios facing the international system would be the simultaneous eruption of a crisis in Europe and another in Asia, forcing major powers to manage several fronts at the same time.

An Unprecedented Level of Global Friction

On a broader level, Perry says the world has not experienced such a concentration of friction points between major powers for decades.

Alongside conventional warfare, countries are confronting one another through cyber operations, information warfare, competition over resources and energy, and struggles over supply chains.

These factors make the character of modern conflict considerably more complex than in previous eras.

Perry does not argue that a Third World War is inevitable. Instead, he warns against assuming that major powers will always be capable of containing crises.

During the Cold War, fear of nuclear destruction acted as a powerful deterrent. Today, however, the larger number of competing actors and the presence of heavily armed regional powers make risk management considerably more difficult.

The Lesson of the First World War

Perry points to the First World War as a historical warning.

What began as a limited crisis following the assassination of the heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne became a full-scale war because of the network of alliances connecting the major powers.

The central lesson, he argues, is that states do not always get to choose the scale of the wars they enter.

A confrontation may begin as a limited conflict before expanding through successive rounds of retaliation and escalation.

Perry concludes that the greatest danger does not necessarily lie in one major conflict, but in several crises erupting simultaneously across Europe, the Middle East and Asia.

The world, in his view, is entering a period that requires an exceptional degree of diplomacy and restraint, because the accumulation of smaller flashpoints could ignite a conflict far larger than any of the parties initially expect.

The spectre of a Third World War does not mean catastrophe is inevitable, he concludes, but it reflects the reality that the international order is passing through a turbulent transition in which old deterrence mechanisms are weakening, competition among major powers is intensifying, and preventing a global explosion is becoming increasingly difficult.
