Hebrew newspaper Maariv highlighted what it described as an “unusual warning” issued by the chief executive of Israel’s electricity company regarding the possibility of renewed war with Iran.
The newspaper said growing security fears continue despite the current calm, which it described as highly tense amid expectations that US President Donald Trump could “pull the trigger at any moment” and drag the Middle East back into a new cycle of war.
According to the report, the scenario now resurfacing in Israeli headlines is what has been labelled the “doomsday scenario”.
Maariv explained that the scenario involves Iran, Hezbollah, or any force possessing large scale missile capabilities launching a massive barrage of missiles against Israel. Such an attack, the report said, could cause severe damage to Israeli infrastructure, particularly the electricity sector, which it described as one of the most critical resources in modern life.
The newspaper added that worst case assessments point to the possibility of prolonged power outages across large parts of Israel.
It noted that the issue was raised publicly by Meir Spiegler, chief executive of the Israel Electric Corporation, during an interview with Neve Dromi at the Municipal Federation Conference in Eilat.
The report also referred to a study exposing what it described as a series of serious vulnerabilities within Israel’s energy system, warning that under current conditions Tel Aviv could face electricity blackouts at critical sites during wartime.
