After Iran Ceasefire Collapse, Trump’s Options Narrow as Signs Point to a Long War of Attrition

The ceasefire agreement between the United States and Iran lasted only a few weeks before confrontations resumed, pushing US President Donald Trump into a more complicated phase of the conflict, defined by a lack of easy options and mounting political, economic and military costs.

Analyses published by The New York Times, The Washington Post and The Economist, alongside Axios, broadly agree that the collapse of the ceasefire is more than a diplomatic setback. It exposes the fragility of an agreement reached in haste and opens the door to a war of attrition that could last for months or even years, as the US midterm elections approach.

The New York Times argues that Trump is now confronting the consequences of an agreement that was drafted quickly to allow him to declare a political achievement, despite leaving the fundamental issues unresolved. These include the future of Iran’s nuclear program, its missile arsenal, Tehran’s regional role and the security of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.

Three Costly Paths

According to the newspaper, the US president had gambled that economic interests would push the Iranian leadership to change its behaviour. Instead, he encountered the persistence of the confrontational approach that has shaped the Iranian system since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

With the ceasefire now collapsed, Trump faces three costly paths:

Trump Addresses Prospect of Renewed War as Talks Remain Uncertain

  1. A major military escalation that could drag Washington into another war without domestic support.
  2. The reimposition of a prolonged economic and naval blockade requiring an extensive US military presence.
  3. Acceptance of a state of neither war nor peace, characterised by intermittent rounds of strikes and negotiations.

The newspaper quoted Richard Fontaine, chief executive of the Center for a New American Security, as saying that all the options were “unattractive”. He predicted that the coming period would see low-intensity reciprocal attacks, interrupted by diplomatic mediation and fragile ceasefires, before another round of fighting begins. He described the likely pattern as a prolonged fluctuation between a cold war and a limited hot war.

The New York Times also argues that the agreement gave Iran considerable room to influence shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. The terms left passage through the strait ambiguous, which Tehran exploited to justify attacks on oil tankers and commercial vessels.

Domestic Repercussions in the United States

The Washington Post focuses on the consequences inside the United States, arguing that the collapse of the ceasefire has returned Trump to the same predicament: a war he cannot end, opposed by most Americans, with midterm elections approaching and Republicans concerned they could pay the political price.

The newspaper notes that the renewed fighting has already driven oil prices higher and financial markets lower. Meanwhile, the US administration has begun carrying out new strikes that it says are intended to reduce Iran’s ability to threaten freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.

The newspaper does not rule out the possibility that higher fuel and food prices could become an electoral burden for the Republican Party, particularly because voters remain primarily concerned with the cost of living.

It also notes that most Republican lawmakers continue to support Trump despite public opposition to the war, while the Democratic Party has used the collapse of the ceasefire to renew its accusation that the president dragged the country into a “war of choice” that raised energy prices and increased financial pressure on Americans.

Failed Appeasement

A Washington Post editorial goes further, arguing that the policy of appeasing Iran has proven unsuccessful and that Tehran interpreted reduced pressure and sanctions as a sign of weakness rather than a gesture of goodwill.

The newspaper argues that the US administration must now maintain economic and military pressure by tightening sanctions, imposing an embargo on Iranian oil exports and conducting limited military operations when necessary, rather than returning to financial concessions in exchange for Iranian promises that are not implemented.

By contrast, The Economist focuses on changes within Iran following the death of former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. It argues that power has gradually shifted from the religious establishment towards the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, which has become increasingly inclined to use military force as a primary means of negotiating with Washington.

The magazine says the new leadership appears more willing to demonstrate military strength and prolong the confrontation, believing it can exhaust the United States politically and economically. At the same time, it identifies economic pressure as the system’s main vulnerability, amid expanding poverty, the decline of the middle class and the destruction of large parts of the country’s industrial infrastructure as a result of the war.

A Striking Shift in Trump’s Rhetoric

Axios highlights a significant shift in Trump’s rhetoric. Within only a few weeks, he moved from praising Iran’s new leadership and describing the agreement as an “unconditional surrender” to declaring that the ceasefire was “over”, describing Iranian leaders as “sick” and “violent”, and arguing that negotiating with them had become a “waste of time”.

Taken together, these analyses conclude that the collapse of the ceasefire does not merely signal the return of military operations. It also exposes the failure of relying on a temporary agreement that did not address the roots of the crisis.

While Washington seeks to avoid a full-scale war, Tehran appears prepared for a prolonged, low-intensity confrontation. The region is therefore entering a new phase of instability in which military calculations, economic pressure and political deadlines on both sides of the conflict are becoming increasingly intertwined.
