An Israeli media report has revealed details of what it described as a secret joint plan between Mossad and the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) aimed at overthrowing the Iranian government following the Israeli and American assault on Iran that began on 28 February.
According to Israel Hayom, the operation collapsed at the final stage despite months of coordination and preparation involving regional actors and armed groups positioned around Iran’s borders.
In an article by Israeli commentator Amit Segal, the newspaper described the operation as an “ambitious, perhaps overly ambitious” attempt to ignite a coordinated uprising against Tehran from multiple fronts.
Kurdish Offensive Planned From Iraq Into Iran
The report claimed the core of the strategy centred on launching a Kurdish armed advance from northern Iraq into Iranian territory.
According to the newspaper, the plan envisioned thousands of Kurdish fighters moving into Iran to seize Kurdish populated regions home to approximately eight million people, many of whom were reportedly armed.
The operation allegedly aimed to establish control over these areas before expanding eastward deeper into Iranian territory.
At the same time, armed groups from other ethnic and minority communities were reportedly expected to infiltrate Iran from several directions in a broader effort intended to destabilise the state and eventually push towards Tehran.
CIA Reportedly Played Direct Role in Planning
The article stressed that the CIA was not merely informed of the operation, but was allegedly a direct and active partner in its planning.
The newspaper argued that public narratives portraying Israel as attempting to drag former US President Donald Trump into a reckless regional conflict ignore what it described as Washington’s full involvement in the strategy.
The report compared the alleged operation to previous Mossad covert actions, describing it as so extraordinary that many initially viewed it as unrealistic before its reported collapse.
According to the newspaper, one of the central objectives involved unifying Kurdish political factions under a single platform focused on removing the Iranian government.
It further claimed that Israeli forces had already begun targeting Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps bases near border regions as part of preparations designed to clear the path for the planned offensive.
Erdogan and Qatar Allegedly Intervened
Despite the scale of the operation, the report stated that two critical phone calls dramatically altered the course of events.
According to Israel Hayom, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan contacted Trump after reports emerged that the attack had begun.
The newspaper claimed Erdoğan convinced Trump during what it described as an angry phone conversation to abandon support for the Kurdish offensive.
The report added that a second intervention came from the Emir of Qatar following attacks targeting an Iranian energy facility.
According to the newspaper, that call contributed to halting further strikes that could have severely damaged the economic infrastructure linked to Iran’s Revolutionary Guard.
Questions Remain Over Future of the Plan
The report concluded by raising questions over whether the operation could eventually be revived and whether its collapse created tensions between Washington and Tel Aviv.
However, senior officials cited by the newspaper denied any deterioration in relations, insisting coordination between the United States and Israel remains stronger than it was at the beginning of the campaign.
Despite that, the article suggested Kurdish armed groups would require additional time before they could be prepared again for operations along Iran’s frontlines.
