The American newspaper The New York Times has revealed details of a proposed agreement expected to be signed between the United States and Iran.
According to US officials cited by the newspaper, Iran has agreed to relinquish its stockpile of enriched uranium under the agreement announced by President Donald Trump.
Officials stated that the proposed deal would require Tehran to give up its reserves of highly enriched uranium. However, the agreement reportedly postpones final decisions regarding the exact mechanism for surrendering the uranium until future negotiations.
The report added that the proposal does not yet define how Iran would dispose of its enriched uranium stockpile. Officials indicated that a public declaration by Tehran committing to abandon highly enriched uranium would be a decisive step toward securing the success of the agreement, particularly amid concerns within the Trump administration over potential Republican opposition in Congress.
US officials also confirmed that any agreement would include the release of billions of dollars in frozen Iranian assets held abroad. At the same time, they stressed that Iran would not gain access to the majority of those assets without a formal nuclear agreement.
