Iran has submitted a lengthy multi page response to the latest American proposal aimed at ending the war, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal, signalling that communication channels between both sides remain active despite widening disagreements.
The newspaper reported that Tehran repeated its demands in detail throughout the response, leaving a significant gap between the two sides unresolved. The Iranian reply reportedly failed to meet Washington’s demand for a prior commitment regarding the future of Iran’s nuclear programme.
According to the report, Iran proposed ending the fighting and gradually reopening the Strait of Hormuz in exchange for lifting the American blockade imposed on the country. The proposal links military de escalation with economic concessions.
The Iranian response also included a proposal to reduce part of its stockpile of highly enriched uranium while transferring the remaining portion to a third country, in what appears to be an attempt to address concerns surrounding uranium enrichment levels.
The report added that Tehran demanded guarantees allowing it to recover the enriched uranium if negotiations collapse or if the United States withdraws from any future agreement.
Iran also expressed willingness to suspend uranium enrichment for a period shorter than the twenty years requested by Washington. However, Tehran rejected dismantling its nuclear facilities, leaving the core points of dispute between both sides unresolved.
