New satellite image analysis published by the The Washington Post has revealed that Iranian air strikes destroyed or damaged at least 228 American military facilities and pieces of equipment across the Middle East since the war began on 28 February.
According to the newspaper’s investigation, the damage extended far beyond previous public disclosures by the US government. Analysed satellite imagery showed destruction affecting aircraft hangars, military barracks, fuel depots, aircraft, radar systems, communications infrastructure, and air defence equipment.
The report stated that the growing Iranian threat forced American military leadership to evacuate large numbers of personnel from regional bases during the early stages of the conflict.
The US military confirmed the deaths of seven soldiers during attacks on its facilities, including six in Kuwait and one in Saudi Arabia. More than 400 American troops were reportedly injured by late April, with at least 12 suffering serious wounds.
Restrictions on Satellite Imagery
The newspaper noted that obtaining recent satellite imagery became increasingly difficult after the US government reportedly requested image suppression over conflict zones. Satellite companies including Maxar and Planet complied with requests to restrict imagery access during the war.
At the same time, Iranian media outlets published high resolution images documenting the damage. The Washington Post stated that it verified 109 Iranian images by comparing them with imagery from the European Copernicus system and Planet satellite data.
The investigation excluded 19 inconclusive images but reported finding no evidence of manipulation or fabrication in the verified material.
In addition, the newspaper identified 10 further damaged facilities through Planet imagery that did not appear in the Iranian releases, bringing the total documented damage to 217 facilities and 11 pieces of military equipment spread across 15 military sites.
Experts: Iranian Strikes Were Precise
Military analysts cited in the report said the Iranian attacks demonstrated significant accuracy and operational planning.
Mark Cancian of the Center for Strategic and International Studies stated that many strikes appeared to deliberately target residential and accommodation areas inside bases in an effort to maximise casualties.
Experts also argued that the US military underestimated Iran’s targeting capabilities and failed to properly adapt to the growing threat posed by drone warfare. Some bases, according to the report, remained inadequately protected despite escalating attacks.
Sensitive Military Assets Hit
The damage reportedly included advanced military systems and strategic infrastructure, including Patriot and THAAD radar systems, E-3 Sentry aircraft, satellite communications sites, power stations, fuel storage tanks, and logistical facilities.
The investigation also highlighted attacks on what it described as “easy targets”, including gyms and dining halls located within military compounds.
Most of the documented destruction was concentrated around the headquarters of the US Fifth Fleet in Bahrain and across three military bases in Kuwait.
Analysts cited by the newspaper suggested that bases in Bahrain and Kuwait sustained heavier damage because those countries allowed American forces to launch military operations from their territory, unlike other Gulf states that reportedly refused similar involvement.
