Israeli security officials have issued fresh warnings over a potential breakdown of the ceasefire understandings with Lebanon, claiming ongoing violations attributed to Hezbollah. The statements were reported by the Israeli Public Broadcasting Corporation, citing unnamed Israeli security sources.
According to these sources, the agreement could collapse in the absence of sustained American pressure on Beirut. Israel is reportedly pushing the United States to exert influence on the Lebanese government and military, specifically demanding action against Hezbollah in areas beyond what Israel defines as a “security zone”.
Pressure on Beirut and Military Demands
Israeli officials framed the situation as contingent on external intervention, arguing that without US involvement, the current arrangement lacks enforceability. Their position reflects a broader attempt to reshape the operational landscape in southern Lebanon by compelling the Lebanese Armed Forces to confront Hezbollah directly.
The same sources described the situation on the ground as “complex”, warning that continued tensions could rapidly deteriorate into renewed conflict.
Ongoing Violations and Escalation Dynamics
These warnings come amid continued Israeli military activity inside Lebanon, despite the ceasefire that came into effect on 17 April for an initial period of ten days. The truce was later extended by Donald Trump for an additional three weeks.
Hezbollah, for its part, maintains that its actions are a direct response to Israeli violations of the ceasefire, reinforcing a cycle of escalation that places the agreement under increasing strain.
