Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps announced on Tuesday that it had taken possession of an intact and unexploded GBU-39 Small Diameter Bomb in Lorestan province, western Iran.
According to the statement, a specialised detection and disposal unit affiliated with the Guard successfully recovered and dismantled the bomb without detonation. The munition had long been considered highly sensitive, with the United States reportedly concerned about the potential exposure of its underlying technology.
One of the Most Advanced US Precision Weapons
Iranian outlet Tasnim News Agency reported that the Guard had secured one of the most advanced American guided bombs after it failed to explode. The report highlighted that the weapon combines a relatively lightweight warhead with significant destructive capability.
Advanced Guidance and Anti-Jamming Systems
The bomb is equipped with advanced guidance and control systems, including anti-jamming technology linked to GPS navigation. It also features a composite structure designed to enhance performance and durability.
Tasnim added that the Guard’s explosive ordnance disposal unit successfully neutralised the device and that its classified technologies are expected to be examined.
