A Muslim woman AYUSH doctor, Nusrat Parveen, whose niqab was pulled down by Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar during an appointment letter distribution event on December 15, 2025, failed to report for duty on Saturday, December 20—the original deadline.
Officials confirmed she did not join at Sabalpur Community Health Centre in Patna Sadar, though reports suggest the joining period may be extended in this “special case.”
The viral video from the Patna ceremony showed Kumar questioning the doctor’s veil, saying “What is this?” before pulling it down, exposing her face. The act triggered widespread condemnation from opposition parties like RJD and Congress, who called it a “vile” violation of women’s dignity and autonomy.
Leaders, including Shashi Tharoor, Mehbooba Mufti, Omar Abdullah, and Iltija Mufti, criticised it as disrespectful to religious practices and potentially Islamophobic. Amnesty International termed it an “assault on her dignity and identity,” while police complaints were filed against Kumar in multiple states.
Bihar Governor Arif Mohammad Khan downplayed the incident as a “fatherly gesture,” stating, “Can there be a dispute between a father and a daughter?” His remarks drew further backlash for ignoring issues of consent.
In response, Jharkhand Health Minister Irfan Ansari condemned Kumar’s actions and offered the doctor a government job with a Rs 3 lakh monthly salary, accommodation, and preferred posting, emphasising respect for women and the medical fraternity.
The controversy highlights debates over personal autonomy, religious freedom, and public conduct by officials, with no direct response yet from the doctor or her family.
