The controversy has sparked furious debate across Gaza and the Arab world. Many see it as evidence that Abu Dhabi’s involvement in Gaza goes far beyond diplomacy, entering the realm of political betrayal and complicity in Israel’s war strategy.

“To the hero of difficult missions, Yasser Abu Shabab… Gaza has become narrow, and Abu Dhabi, the capital of Arabism, awaits you and welcomes you from now.”
Pro-government pages circulated the statement as a gesture of pride, not shame. It framed a collaborator with the occupation as a “hero,” and promised him comfort and protection in Dubai. For Palestinians still burying their dead under the rubble, such words cut like a second blade.
UAE Gaza Offers: From Complicity to Celebration
The timing of the Emirati message was revealing. It came precisely when Palestinian resistance fighters were dismantling Israeli-linked militias that had terrorised civilians during the war, gangs that looted humanitarian aid, spied on resistance positions, and assisted in assassinations.
Reports from the ground identified vehicles carrying UAE licence plates alongside members of these militias. Field sources also mentioned Emirati-supplied four-wheel-drive vehicles, encrypted communication devices, and advanced training that reached these networks through indirect channels.
Rather than distancing itself, Abu Dhabi has chosen to embrace the collaborators, presenting them as victims in need of asylum. This is not humanitarianism; it is political insurance for those who served the occupier.
The Logic Behind the Offer
The timing of these UAE Gaza offers coincides with Palestinian resistance operations to eliminate Israeli-backed militias inside the Strip. These gangs, known for looting humanitarian aid and spying for the occupation, are now being portrayed by Emirati outlets as victims in need of “asylum.”
Field reports show vehicles with UAE licence plates near militia positions, alongside evidence of Emirati funding, training, and logistical aid. Sources cited advanced communication systems and four-wheel drives reaching these networks via Emirati channels.
The message is unmistakable: Abu Dhabi is protecting collaborators, not victims, a move that threatens to rewrite Gaza’s moral and political order.
Disposable Agents in a Dirty War
Yet history offers a cruel lesson for those who trade loyalty for protection: proxies are expendable. The promise of safety rarely lasts beyond the usefulness of the pawn.
In Yasser Abu Shabab’s case, dangers surround him from every direction, from Palestinian factions that view him as a symbol of treason, to clan rivalries inside Gaza, and finally from the very sponsors who may one day silence him to erase evidence of collaboration.
If he ever reaches Dubai, he may find himself not a guest but a hostage of circumstance, a man who knows too much, living under protection that can vanish with a single phone call.

Analysts describe three motives behind the UAE’s Gaza involvement:

The False Promise of Protection
For figures like Yasser Abu Shabab, any UAE guarantee of safety is likely temporary. In past proxy wars, collaborators were discarded once their utility ended. Abu Shabab now faces threats from all directions, resistance groups, Gaza clans, and the very foreign sponsors who might silence him to bury their involvement.
If he is indeed moved to Dubai, he may become a “booby-trapped guest”, protected today, expendable tomorrow.
The Broader Betrayal
By offering asylum to Gaza collaborators, the UAE Gaza policy represents a deeper moral collapse, the transformation of Arab solidarity into strategic betrayal. The Emirates once claimed to champion Arab unity; now it offers a haven to those who aided the occupier against their own people.
