A video released by the Al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of Hamas, sparked a wide reaction after it used a QR code carrying a stark warning to Israel: expanding its operations in Gaza City will cost it both soldiers and captives.
The video, titled “Urgent Warning,” was broadcast on Al-Qassam’s official Telegram channel in both Arabic and Hebrew. It displayed photos of 45 Israeli captives without revealing their fate, alongside footage of one captive burying his face in his hands in despair.
The message was unambiguous:
“You will pay the price of expanding your criminal operations in Gaza City with the blood of your soldiers and your captives.”
QR Codes on the Battlefield
Commentators described this as a “qualitative development in psychological and media warfare.” Al-Qassam used the very tool that the Israeli army has often relied on to issue evacuation instructions to Gazans — but this time, to deliver a reverse warning directly to Israelis.
Notably, the video began with a QR code which, when scanned, redirected users to the Israeli army’s own website listing the names and photos of soldiers killed in the war. Observers highlighted this as a remarkable technological move, nearly two years into Israel’s assault on Gaza.
Exchanging Messages
Social media users explained that what Palestinians have long received as evacuation orders via QR codes was now mirrored back: a warning to Israelis that expanded military operations will mean more coffins.
Others called it a “brilliant message” that condensed the reality into a single point — any expansion will bring more dead soldiers, and possibly more captives.
One activist wrote:
“Al-Qassam uses QR codes for dead soldiers — this is an evolution in weapons and technology.”
Another commented:
“The military media in Gaza hits harder than bullets.”
A Double Warning
According to observers, the video carried a dual meaning: a clear warning to Israel of the human cost of escalation, and a reminder that the fate of Israeli captives is directly tied to the fate of its soldiers on the battlefield.
Analysts praised Al-Qassam’s ability to innovate in media and psychological warfare with minimal resources, more than 22 months into Israel’s siege and relentless war on Gaza.
This latest warning comes after Al-Qassam declared on 29 August that Israel will pay for its plan to occupy Gaza City “with the blood of its soldiers,” stressing that Israeli captives are positioned alongside fighters in the same dangerous conditions of combat and survival.
Israel estimates that 48 captives are being held by the resistance in Gaza, including about 20 believed alive. Meanwhile, over 10,800 Palestinians remain imprisoned in Israeli jails, enduring torture, starvation, and medical neglect — with many killed as documented by Palestinian and Israeli human rights reports.
