Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim reaffirmed his country’s unwavering commitment to supporting the Palestinian cause and standing with the Palestinian people in all international forums. Speaking on Sunday evening, Ibrahim stressed Malaysia’s refusal to recognize Israeli occupation under any circumstances.
Firm Stance Despite Pressure
Ibrahim revealed that he has faced significant pressure due to his strong opposition to Israel. However, he maintained that Malaysia will continue to adhere to its principled stance without compromise.
Drawing a parallel, the Prime Minister compared the struggles of Hamas leaders Ismail Haniyeh and Yahya Sinwar to the late Nelson Mandela’s fight to liberate South Africa from apartheid.
Call for UN Action Against Israel
The Prime Minister emphasized that “Israel should be expelled from the United Nations,” and noted that Malaysia is working on a draft resolution to present to the UN General Assembly. This comes amid ongoing Israeli crimes against Palestinians, including attacks on civilians and hospitals.
He also announced Malaysia’s appeal to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to hold Israel accountable for its crimes in Gaza. Malaysia, he added, will continue its legal and diplomatic efforts in all regional and international arenas.
Advocacy on the Global Stage
During the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Peru, Ibrahim reiterated Malaysia’s unwavering support for Palestine. He highlighted that he presented Malaysia’s position to U.S. President Joe Biden and Secretary of State Antony Blinken, though “they did not listen.”
The Prime Minister accused the United States and Western nations of complicity with Israel, stating that their silence on ongoing crimes in Gaza and the occupied Palestinian territories makes them de facto partners in these crimes.
On the social platform X (formerly Twitter), Ibrahim wrote that the West “continues to turn a blind eye to the atrocities committed by Israel, effectively making it an accomplice in these crimes against humanity.”
Humanitarian Support for Gaza
Malaysia remains steadfast in its humanitarian support for Gaza, with ongoing efforts to treat injured women and children in Malaysian hospitals. Ibrahim commended the critical role played by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) in providing humanitarian aid, affirming that Malaysia will continue to support its activities in Gaza.
A Message of Solidarity
In his closing remarks, Ibrahim addressed a message of solidarity to the Palestinian and Lebanese peoples, urging them to remain resilient in the face of challenges. “Stand firm; we are with you, we support you, and we pray for your victory,” he said.
Malaysia’s Ban on Israeli Ships
It is worth noting that in December 2023, Malaysia banned ships flying the Israeli flag and prohibited vessels bound for Israel from loading goods at Malaysian ports. This decision was a direct response to Israel’s persistent violations of international law and humanitarian principles.
