US media outlets reported a security incident involving Donald Trump during the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, where he and the First Lady were evacuated by his security detail.
According to reports, Trump and Vice President JD Vance were escorted out of the event venue after gunshots were heard inside the premises.
CBS News confirmed that “President Trump and senior officials were urgently evacuated from the White House Correspondents’ Dinner during a security incident.” Meanwhile, Fox News cited a source stating that “an armed individual was arrested in the lobby of the Washington Hilton, where Trump was attending the dinner.”
Trump later stated that the suspected shooter had been apprehended. He added that he had recommended the dinner continue as planned, saying: “I will comply with the directions of law enforcement, who will make a decision shortly.”
He described the incident as “an eventful evening in Washington,” while praising the performance of the United States Secret Service and other law enforcement bodies, stating they had done an “excellent job.”
According to CNN, a source indicated that presidential security officials were opposed to Trump returning to the event despite his expressed willingness. The New York Times also reported that Trump had left the Washington Hilton, where the dinner was being held.
