Videos circulating widely across social media platforms have amassed millions of views, allegedly showing explosions on ships caused by naval mines planted by Iran in the Arabian Gulf.
The footage appears to show sailors of various nationalities documenting the incidents through live broadcasts, lending an initial sense of credibility to the claims. These videos have been widely shared in multiple formats, accompanied by captions asserting that recent maritime attacks have taken place amid escalating military tensions in the region.
The rapid spread of this content has amplified the narrative, particularly due to the dramatic camera angles and audio effects that simulate a real time maritime incident.
Verification Exposes Fabrication
However, verification efforts have confirmed that the videos were generated using artificial intelligence technologies and do not reflect real world events.
Analysis revealed clear distortions in object movement, particularly in how water interacts with explosions. There were also inconsistencies in audio synchronisation, alongside repeated visual anomalies in ship structures and facial details.
One of the most notable indicators was the appearance of an illuminated sign resembling a highway display board, an element that is entirely illogical within an open sea environment.
No Evidence of Real Maritime Incident
Further discrediting the claims is the absence of any official confirmation of such incidents. International maritime monitoring bodies, including the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations, have not issued any navigational warnings or reports indicating attacks on vessels during the timeframe in which the videos circulated.
Similarly, the United States Central Command has not reported any such incidents. Events of this scale, particularly in a critical chokepoint like the Strait of Hormuz, would typically trigger immediate alerts and security updates for maritime traffic. The absence of such responses strongly indicates that the circulating narrative is not grounded in actual field events.
Context of Escalation
This wave of misinformation coincides with heightened political and military tensions between Washington and Tehran. The United States has announced the enforcement of a naval blockade targeting Iranian ports, extending to commercial vessels of various nationalities.
According to American sources cited by the The Wall Street Journal, the scale of the operation is significant. More than 10,000 US personnel are reportedly involved, including Marine units and special operations forces, supported by over 15 warships and dozens of aircraft.
