In a world that increasingly resembles the dystopian pages of George Orwell’s 1984, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) aired in 2020 a chilling podcast series titled Brain Washed. It featured the haunting testimonies of survivors of a secret program run by the CIA, in partnership with the Canadian government, that subjected human beings to mind-control experiments under the codename MK Ultra.
MK Ultra: When Science Became Torture
Launched in the 1950s, Project MK Ultra aimed to create drugs and techniques capable of “brainwashing” and controlling human thought. Researchers experimented with psychedelics, electric shocks, and hypnosis in attempts to reprogram the human mind.
The parallels with Orwell’s novel are striking. In 1984, truth itself was dismantled: war is peace, freedom is slavery, ignorance is strength. Thought criminals were tortured in the infamous “Room 101” until they not only said but truly believed lies.
This is exactly what the CIA sought to achieve: not just compliance, but the rewriting of human consciousness. Hundreds — perhaps thousands — of victims were reduced to guinea pigs in experiments that violated every moral code of science and medicine.
Experiments That Crossed Borders
The program extended beyond U.S. borders. At Montreal’s Allan Memorial Institute, Indigenous children were reportedly subjected to brutal experiments, their fragile bodies unable to withstand the LSD overdoses, sensory deprivation, and electric shocks. Many perished, their graves unmarked and their identities erased.
One of the most infamous CIA scientists was Dr. Sidney Gottlieb, the chemist who introduced LSD into America. Believing he had found the “key to mind control,” he worked with the giant pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly to monopolise global supplies of LSD.
CIA-front organisations, such as the Society for the Investigation of Human Ecology, funnelled money into universities, hospitals, and psychiatric clinics, funding experiments that destroyed countless lives under the guise of “research.”
The “Manchurian Candidate” Nightmare
The Cold War obsession with psychological warfare fuelled the paranoia. Inspired by fears of communists’ “brainwashing” American prisoners in Korea, the CIA sought its own weapon. The 1962 film The Manchurian Candidate dramatised this fear — a soldier turned into a “sleeper assassin” through hypnosis and psychological conditioning.
The CIA wanted reality to mirror fiction. They funded techniques that could break down a person’s identity, wipe their memory, and reprogram their thoughts. Some victims endured drug-induced comas for weeks, hearing recorded messages repeated hundreds of thousands of times in an attempt to overwrite their personalities.
Victims’ Stories: Lives Shattered
One victim, Esther Schreier, entered the Allan Memorial Institute in 1960 seeking psychiatric help during pregnancy. Instead, she was injected with amphetamines, shocked with electricity, and forced into drug-induced sleep for 30 days.
Another, Robert Logie, was only 18 when he was admitted for minor leg pain. He was subjected to LSD, massive electric shocks, and memory-erasing “depatterning” treatments that left him permanently traumatised.
Patients emerged unable to remember their own names, unable to recognise their reflections, and some even lost the ability to perform basic bodily functions. Their “doctors” — hailed as leaders of psychiatry at the time — called this a scientific breakthrough.
Cover-Up and Exposure
By the early 1970s, CIA Director Richard Helms ordered the destruction of MK Ultra’s records to conceal the agency’s crimes. But in 1974, journalist Seymour Hersh broke the story in The New York Times.
Public outrage forced Congress to investigate. The Church Committee, led by Senator Frank Church, uncovered horrifying details of CIA human experimentation. In 1976, an executive order was issued banning intelligence agencies from conducting non-consensual human experimentation.
Despite this, most MK Ultra victims never received justice. Their lives were shattered, their suffering buried under the banner of “national security.”
Conclusion
Project MK Ultra represents one of the darkest chapters in American history — a reminder that when power is unchecked, science becomes a weapon, and human beings become disposable test subjects.
The program’s legacy still haunts public trust today, raising questions about the hidden experiments of our era, and whether lessons have truly been learned — or quietly forgotten.
