The Lost City of Iram: The Qur’anic Nation That Trusted Its Power

October 8, 2026

Among the most mysterious names in the Qur’an is Iram, mentioned in Surah al-Fajr alongside the powerful nation of Aad.

Allah says:

“Have you not seen how your Lord dealt with Aad, Iram of the pillars, the like of whom had never been created in the land?”
Surah al-Fajr 89:6-8

These verses made Iram one of the most discussed names in Islamic heritage. Was it a lost city? A tribe? A royal house of Aad? A civilisation known for pillars, tents, strength or monumental construction?

The Qur’an gives the name, the warning and the outcome. It does not give us a tourist map.

That matters.

The story of Iram is not about chasing ruins. It is about a nation that trusted its strength until strength became useless.

Iram and the People of Aad

Aad were the people of Prophet Hud, peace be upon him. They were a powerful nation, known for might, arrogance and rejection of the messenger sent to them.

The Qur’an describes their attitude clearly:

“As for Aad, they were arrogant upon the earth without right and said, ‘Who is greater than us in strength?’”
Surah Fussilat 41:15

The answer came in the same verse: Allah, who created them, was greater than them in strength. Their error was not simply that they were strong. Their error was that they turned strength into arrogance and used power as proof that they could not be touched.

Was Iram a City or a Tribe?

Sunni tafsir records more than one view about Iram.

Al-Tabari mentions that scholars differed. Some said Iram was a city. Some connected it to places like Alexandria or Damascus. Others said it was a community, an ancient people, or a tribe of Aad. Al-Tabari’s preferred view was that Iram was the name of a tribe of Aad, not necessarily a confirmed city with known ruins.

This is an important correction.

Modern content often presents Iram as if its exact city has been found. That is not the careful Sunni approach. The Qur’an confirms Iram. Tafsir confirms scholarly discussion. But the exact identification of Iram as a specific archaeological site remains uncertain.

So the safest title is “The Lost City of Iram” because that is how many readers know the subject. But the article must be honest: the Qur’anic wording can refer to a people, a tribe, or a civilisation, not only a city.

“Iram of the Pillars”

The phrase “Iram of the pillars” is what gives the story its mystery.

Al-Tabari records several interpretations of “dhāt al-ʿimād”, meaning “possessor of pillars”. Some scholars linked it to their tall bodies and strength. Others said it referred to tent-poles because they were a people who moved with tents. Others connected it to raised structures or buildings, but al-Tabari notes that no reliable report establishes a specific known structure with pillars.

Ibn Kathir also records the discussion around the verse “the like of whom had never been created in the land.” He mentions that some linked it to their buildings or pillars, while Qatadah and Ibn Jarir understood it as referring to the tribe itself, meaning no people like them had been created in their time. Ibn Kathir preferred this stronger reading.

This makes the Qur’anic warning sharper.

Iram was not destroyed because it was ordinary.

It was destroyed despite being extraordinary.

A Civilisation of Monuments and Power

Surah ash-Shu’ara gives another layer of the Aad story. Prophet Hud rebuked his people:

“Do you construct on every elevation a sign, amusing yourselves, and take for yourselves constructions as if you would live forever?”

The verses then mention their livestock, children, gardens and springs, showing that Aad enjoyed immense worldly blessing. But instead of gratitude, they chose arrogance and rejection.

This is the Qur’anic portrait of Aad:

They had power.

They had wealth.

They had construction.

They had status.

They had worldly security.

But they lost the one thing that mattered: submission to Allah.

The Warning of Prophet Hud

Hud, peace be upon him, called them to worship Allah alone. He warned them against arrogance and reminded them that their blessings were from Allah, not from their own invincibility.

But Aad rejected him.

They treated warning as weakness. They treated prophetic advice as an obstacle. They saw their own strength as proof that punishment would never reach them.

This is the mindset the Qur’an exposes again and again: when a civilisation begins to worship its own power, it stops hearing truth.

How Aad Were Destroyed

The Qur’an states that Aad were destroyed by a violent wind.

In the tafsir of Surah Hud, Ibn Kathir explains that when Allah’s command came, Aad were destroyed by a barren wind, while Hud and those who believed with him were saved by Allah’s mercy. The passage also explains that Aad rejected the signs of their Lord and followed the command of proud, obstinate leaders.

The punishment matched their arrogance.

They boasted of strength.

They were broken by wind.

They built as if they would remain forever.

They became a warning for every nation after them.

Has Iram Been Found?

Many modern claims connect Iram to archaeological discoveries in Arabia, especially around ancient trade routes and ruins linked to Ubar or the Empty Quarter. These theories are interesting, but they are not Qur’anic certainty.

A serious Islamic article should not claim more than the evidence allows.

The Qur’an confirms Iram and Aad.

Tafsir confirms that scholars differed over whether Iram refers to a city, tribe or people.

Archaeology may offer possible connections, but it does not replace revelation, and it does not settle the tafsir debate.

The real lesson of Iram does not depend on locating its stones.

The Qur’an preserved what mattered: their power, their arrogance, their rejection and their end.

Why Iram Still Matters

Iram is not just an ancient mystery.

It is a mirror.

Every age has its own version of Aad: nations that trust towers, armies, wealth, technology, propaganda and political dominance. They assume power means permanence. They assume size means safety. They assume warning signs are for weaker people.

Then history turns.

The Qur’an does not mention Iram to feed curiosity alone. It mentions Iram to break the illusion that power protects a nation from Allah.

A civilisation can be unmatched in its time and still vanish.

A people can dominate the land and still lose everything.

A city can rise high and still become dust.

Conclusion

Iram remains one of the most mysterious names in the Qur’an.

It is linked to Aad, the powerful nation of Prophet Hud. Sunni tafsir records different views about whether Iram was a city, a tribe or a branch of Aad. The phrase “of the pillars” has also been interpreted in several ways: tall bodies, tent-poles, or monumental structures.

But the message is not uncertain.

Aad were strong, wealthy and confident. They built, boasted and said, “Who is greater than us in strength?”

Then Allah destroyed them by a wind they could not resist.

The lost city of Iram, whether city or tribe, stands as a Qur’anic warning:

Power without faith becomes arrogance.

Arrogance without repentance becomes destruction.

And no civilisation is too strong for Allah.
