Dajjal’s Island: The Most Mysterious Sea Encounter in Hadith

September 27, 2026

Among the most mysterious reports in the books of hadith is the story of Tamim al-Dari, the strange island, the creature known as Al-Jassasah, and the chained figure who identified himself as the Dajjal.

This is not a story from folklore. It is recorded in Sahih Muslim, in the chapter of tribulations and the signs of the Hour, through the narration of Fatimah bint Qays, may Allah be pleased with her.

The report is unusual because it reads like a sea encounter, but it carries serious theological weight. It was not dismissed by the Prophet ﷺ. Rather, he gathered the people, narrated Tamim’s account to them, and confirmed that it matched what he had already told them about the Dajjal.

The Journey That Went Off Course

Tamim al-Dari, who had previously been a Christian before entering Islam, told the Prophet ﷺ that he had travelled by sea with a group of men. Their ship lost direction, and the waves drove them for a long period until they reached an unknown island.

When they landed, they encountered a strange creature covered in hair. The men could not clearly distinguish its front from its back because of the thickness of its hair. This creature was called Al-Jassasah.

What Are the Signs Before the Emergence of the Dajjal?

The name is significant. Scholars commonly connect it to the idea of spying, gathering information or investigating. In the report, the creature does not attack them. Instead, it directs them to a man inside a monastery or structure on the island.

That direction leads to the most chilling part of the hadith.

The Chained Man

Tamim and his companions entered and found a huge man, strongly built and bound in chains. His hands were tied to his neck, and his legs were shackled.

He began questioning them.

He asked about the palm trees of Baysan.

He asked about the Lake of Tiberias.

He asked about the spring of Zughar.

Then he asked whether the Prophet of the unlettered people had appeared.

These questions were not random. They were signs connected to the nearness of his release. In the narration, the chained man explained that when certain conditions changed, the time of his emergence would draw near.

Then he identified himself.

He said he was Al-Masih al-Dajjal.

What the Dajjal Said

In the hadith, the Dajjal says that he will soon be permitted to emerge. When he does, he will travel through the earth and enter every city except Makkah and Madinah. These two cities will be forbidden to him, and angels will guard their entrances.

This point is central.

The Dajjal’s fitnah will be global, but not absolute. His movement will be vast, but controlled by Allah. His deception will be enormous, but he will not enter the two sacred cities.

The Prophet ﷺ then struck the pulpit with his staff and said:

“This is Taibah. This is Taibah. This is Taibah.”

Taibah is Madinah.

The Prophet ﷺ then explained that Tamim’s report agreed with what he had already told the Muslims about the Dajjal.

Why This Hadith Matters

This hadith matters because it gives the Dajjal a concrete reality.

He is not merely a symbol of evil.

He is not only a metaphor for deception.

He is a real figure whose emergence is among the greatest trials before the Hour.

The report also shows that the early Muslims were not dealing with vague myth. The Prophet ﷺ treated the matter seriously, publicly narrated the account, and connected it to his own teaching about the Dajjal.

That is why Sunni scholars included this narration in discussions of the signs of the Hour.

Ibn Kathir also recorded the account in Al-Bidayah wa al-Nihayah, noting the Prophet’s statement that Tamim had narrated something that agreed with what he had been telling the Muslims about Al-Masih al-Dajjal.

Where Is the Island?

The hadith does not identify the island by name.

That is important.

Many people have tried to guess its location, linking it to different islands, oceans or hidden places. But the narration itself does not give enough detail to identify it with certainty.

A serious Sunni approach stops where the evidence stops.

We affirm the hadith.

We do not invent coordinates.

We do not turn the report into internet speculation.

The lesson is not to map the island. The lesson is to understand the seriousness of the Dajjal’s fitnah and the certainty of what the Prophet ﷺ warned about.

The Role of Al-Jassasah

Al-Jassasah remains one of the strangest creatures mentioned in hadith.

The report presents it as a living creature on the island, connected to the chained Dajjal. Its role appears to be guiding Tamim and his companions to the place where the Dajjal was held.

The hadith does not give us enough to explain its species, origin or full nature.

So again, caution is necessary.

Al-Jassasah is real because the authentic report mentions it. But beyond what the narration states, further details remain unknown.

The Warning Behind the Encounter

The story is mysterious, but its message is direct.

The Dajjal will come.

His emergence will be one of the greatest tests in human history.

He will deceive, travel widely and challenge people’s faith on a massive scale.

But he is not independent. He is chained until Allah permits his release. He cannot enter Makkah or Madinah. His power is terrifying, but limited by the decree of Allah.

This is the balance Muslims must understand.

Do not underestimate the Dajjal.

Do not exaggerate him beyond what revelation says.

Conclusion

The hadith of Tamim al-Dari is one of the most extraordinary reports in Sahih Muslim.

A ship lost at sea.

An unknown island.

A strange creature called Al-Jassasah.

A chained man asking about signs.

And the final revelation of his identity: the Dajjal.

The report is not there for entertainment. It is a warning.

The Dajjal is real.

His fitnah is real.

And the believer’s protection is not curiosity, maps or theories. It is sound belief, knowledge of the Sunnah, attachment to Allah, and taking seriously what the Prophet ﷺ warned his Ummah about before the Hour.
