What Happens When You Recite Ayatul Kursi Before Sleeping?

Among the Qur’anic verses associated with protection before sleep, Ayatul Kursi holds a distinctive position in authentic Islamic tradition.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ confirmed that reciting this verse before going to bed brings a particular form of protection: a guardian from Allah remains with the person, and Shaytan does not approach them until morning.

What makes this teaching especially remarkable is the circumstances in which it was transmitted.

According to Sahih al-Bukhari, the instruction was initially given to Abu Hurayrah by an individual repeatedly caught stealing food intended for charity.

Only afterwards did the Prophet ﷺ reveal the intruder’s identity.

He was Shaytan.

The account provides one of the clearest authenticated explanations of why Muslims recite Ayatul Kursi before sleeping. It also raises important questions about the nature of the protection promised, the significance of the verse itself, and the distinction between established religious practice and popular claims.

What Is Ayatul Kursi?

Ayatul Kursi, written in Arabic as آية الكرسي, is verse 255 of Surah Al-Baqarah, the second chapter of the Qur’an.

It is commonly known in English as the Throne Verse.

The verse begins:

اللَّهُ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ الْحَيُّ الْقَيُّومُ

Allahu la ilaha illa huwa al-hayyul-qayyum.

Meaning:

“Allah, there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of existence.”

The verse continues by describing Allah’s absolute sovereignty, His knowledge of everything, His authority over intercession and His preservation of the heavens and the earth.

It also states that neither drowsiness nor sleep overtakes Him.

The complete verse can be read in Surah Al-Baqarah 2:255.

Unlike supplications that directly ask Allah for protection, Ayatul Kursi primarily declares who Allah is and describes His attributes.

This distinction is significant.

The verse does not contain a direct request such as “O Allah, protect me.” Instead, it establishes the absolute power and authority of the One from whom protection comes.

Its importance is further established in a separate authentic narration.

The Prophet ﷺ Identified Ayatul Kursi as the Greatest Verse

In Sahih Muslim 810, Ubayy ibn Ka’b, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated that the Prophet ﷺ asked him:

“Do you know which verse from the Book of Allah is the greatest?”

Ubayy initially replied that Allah and His Messenger knew best.

When the Prophet ﷺ repeated the question, Ubayy answered by reciting the opening of Ayatul Kursi.

The Prophet ﷺ struck him gently on the chest and congratulated him on his knowledge.

This narration establishes the exceptional status of Ayatul Kursi independently of the hadith concerning protection during sleep.

Its significance is not limited to a particular time of day or a specific protective benefit.

Classical Qur’anic commentators, including Imam al-Tabari and Imam al-Qurtubi, examined its descriptions of Allah’s eternal life, knowledge, sovereignty and freedom from the limitations of created beings.

These themes provide important context for understanding why the verse occupies such an elevated position.

The Man Who Visited Abu Hurayrah for Three Nights

The most detailed authentic account concerning Ayatul Kursi before sleeping appears in Sahih al-Bukhari 2311.

Abu Hurayrah narrated that the Prophet ﷺ entrusted him with guarding food collected as Ramadan charity.

One night, someone approached the stored food and began taking handfuls from it.

Abu Hurayrah caught the intruder and informed him that he would be brought before the Prophet ﷺ.

The individual pleaded poverty, explaining that he had dependants to support and was in desperate need.

Abu Hurayrah felt compassion for him and allowed him to leave.

The following morning, the Prophet ﷺ asked Abu Hurayrah what had happened to his prisoner.

After hearing the explanation, the Prophet ﷺ informed him that the intruder had lied and would return.

The following night, the same individual appeared again.

Once more, Abu Hurayrah caught him. Once more, the intruder pleaded hardship and promised not to return.

Abu Hurayrah released him.

The Prophet ﷺ again informed Abu Hurayrah that the individual had lied and would come back.

On the third night, the intruder returned as predicted.

This time, Abu Hurayrah insisted that he would take him to the Prophet ﷺ.

The individual then offered something unusual.

He promised to teach Abu Hurayrah words through which Allah would benefit him.

The Instruction to Recite Ayatul Kursi Before Sleeping

When Abu Hurayrah asked what these words were, the intruder instructed him to recite Ayatul Kursi upon going to bed.

He specified that the entire verse should be recited, beginning with:

اللَّهُ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ الْحَيُّ الْقَيُّومُ

The intruder then described the benefit.

According to the narration, Allah would appoint a guardian over the person, and Shaytan would not approach them until morning.

Abu Hurayrah released the intruder.

The following day, the Prophet ﷺ again asked what had happened.

Abu Hurayrah explained the instruction he had received.

The Prophet ﷺ confirmed that the statement was true, despite the speaker’s habitual dishonesty.

He then asked Abu Hurayrah whether he knew whom he had been speaking to during those three nights.

Abu Hurayrah did not.

The Prophet ﷺ revealed:

“It was Satan.”

The full incident is recorded in Sahih al-Bukhari 2311, with a shorter version in Sahih al-Bukhari 3275.

The crucial point is that the authority of this teaching comes from the Prophet’s ﷺ confirmation, not simply from the statement of Shaytan.

An unreliable speaker happened to communicate something true, and the Prophet ﷺ authenticated that particular statement.

The incident does not establish that other claims attributed to Shaytan should be trusted.

What Protection Does Ayatul Kursi Provide During Sleep?

The authentic hadith establishes two specific benefits.

First, a guardian from Allah will remain with the person.

The Arabic wording refers to a hafiz, meaning a guardian or protector, from Allah.

The narration does not identify this guardian by name or provide a detailed description of how the protection operates.

Although some explanations associate the guardian with an angel, the wording of this particular hadith does not identify a specific angel.

Second, Shaytan will not approach the person until morning.

This is the explicit promise reported by Abu Hurayrah and confirmed by the Prophet ﷺ.

The protection is associated with reciting Ayatul Kursi when going to bed.

It is not presented as a general guarantee that the person will never experience illness, disturbing dreams, emotional distress or other difficulties.

Those broader claims require separate evidence.

The authenticated promise concerns divine protection and Shaytan’s inability to approach the reciter during the period specified in the narration.

Why Is the Verse Particularly Significant Before Sleep?

One of the most interesting connections lies in the content of Ayatul Kursi itself.

The verse declares:

لَا تَأْخُذُهُ سِنَةٌ وَلَا نَوْمٌ

La ta’khudhuhu sinatun wa la nawm.

Meaning:

“Neither drowsiness nor sleep overtakes Him.”

Human beings become unconscious of their surroundings during sleep.

Their senses are limited, their awareness diminishes, and they cannot continuously observe or control what happens around them.

Ayatul Kursi, by contrast, describes Allah as entirely free from these limitations.

In his commentary on verse 2:255, Imam al-Tabari explains that sinah refers to drowsiness, while nawm refers to sleep.

Allah is not subject to either.

This meaning is reinforced by an authentic narration in Sahih Muslim 179, in which the Prophet ﷺ stated that Allah does not sleep and that sleep is not befitting for Him.

The theological connection is important.

A person recites a verse declaring Allah’s uninterrupted knowledge, authority and preservation immediately before entering a state in which the person becomes largely unaware of their surroundings.

The significance of that connection is drawn from the verse’s meaning. It should not be confused with an additional Prophetic promise beyond the protection explicitly mentioned in the hadith.

Does Ayatul Kursi Have to Be Recited Three Times?

The narration in Sahih al-Bukhari does not prescribe repeating Ayatul Kursi three times before sleeping.

Its instruction is to recite the verse from beginning to end.

A person who recites it once has performed the recitation described in the hadith.

This distinction matters because Muslims sometimes encounter instructions to recite particular verses seven, eleven or forty times to obtain specific benefits.

Such numerical requirements cannot be attributed to the Sunnah merely because they are popular.

Any claim that a particular repetition produces a specific religious benefit requires its own evidence.

In the case of the bedtime protection described by Abu Hurayrah, no additional repetition count is specified.

Can You Listen to Ayatul Kursi Instead of Reciting It?

Listening to Qur’anic recitation is a beneficial act of worship.

However, the specific hadith concerning protection before sleep instructs the person to recite Ayatul Kursi.

It does not explicitly state that playing a recording provides the identical benefit.

For someone seeking to follow the practice precisely as described, personal recitation is therefore the clearest course.

The verse can be recited from memory or read from a reliable Qur’anic text.

Its protection is not dependent upon a special recording, a particular reciter or any commercial product.

The relevant act in the narration is reciting the verse itself.

Is Wudu Required Before Reciting Ayatul Kursi at Night?

The hadith of Abu Hurayrah does not make wudu a stated condition for receiving the bedtime protection associated with Ayatul Kursi.

However, performing wudu before sleeping is independently established as a Prophetic recommendation.

In Sahih al-Bukhari 247, the Prophet ﷺ instructed Al-Bara ibn Azib to perform ablution as he would for prayer before going to bed.

It is therefore appropriate to distinguish between two matters.

Performing wudu before sleeping is an established Sunnah.

Reciting Ayatul Kursi before sleeping is associated with the protection confirmed in Sahih al-Bukhari.

Both practices may be performed together, but the narration concerning Ayatul Kursi does not explicitly make the first a prerequisite for the second.

What Else Did the Prophet ﷺ Recite Before Sleeping?

Ayatul Kursi is not the only Qur’anic recitation associated with bedtime.

Aishah, may Allah be pleased with her, narrated that the Prophet ﷺ would recite Surah Al-Ikhlas, Surah Al-Falaq and Surah An-Nas before sleeping.

He would bring his palms together, blow gently into them and wipe over the parts of his body he could reach.

He repeated this three times.

The practice is recorded in Sahih al-Bukhari 5017.

Another authentic narration concerns the final two verses of Surah Al-Baqarah.

In Sahih al-Bukhari 5009, the Prophet ﷺ stated that reciting these two verses at night would suffice the person.

These are separate narrations establishing distinct virtues.

The final two verses of Al-Baqarah are verses 285 and 286, whereas Ayatul Kursi is verse 255.

They should not be confused with one another.

Together, these reports demonstrate that Qur’anic recitation formed an important part of the devotional practices associated with the night.

What Ayatul Kursi Does Not Guarantee

The authentic narration is substantial enough without adding claims that it does not establish.

It does not specifically promise that a person will never experience nightmares.

It does not guarantee freedom from every illness or physical injury.

It does not establish that reciting the verse will automatically remove all forms of anxiety or psychological distress.

Nor does it establish that a recording played continuously throughout the night provides exactly the same protection as the personal recitation described in the hadith.

These distinctions do not diminish the virtue of Ayatul Kursi.

They protect the accuracy of what is attributed to the Prophet ﷺ.

The established benefit is already considerable: Allah’s protection and the prevention of Shaytan approaching the reciter until morning.

Conclusion

The virtue of reciting Ayatul Kursi before sleeping is established through an authentic narration in Sahih al-Bukhari.

Abu Hurayrah encountered an intruder over three consecutive nights while guarding Ramadan charity.

On the third occasion, the intruder instructed him to recite Ayatul Kursi before going to bed, promising that a guardian from Allah would remain with him and that Shaytan would not approach him until morning.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ confirmed the statement and revealed that the intruder was Shaytan.

A separate authentic narration in Sahih Muslim establishes Ayatul Kursi as the greatest verse of the Qur’an.

Its contents describe Allah’s eternal life, unlimited knowledge, complete sovereignty and uninterrupted preservation of His creation.

The practice is therefore supported by both the extraordinary status of the verse and a specific authenticated promise concerning its recitation before sleep.

For Muslims seeking to follow this Sunnah, the instruction is uncomplicated.

Recite Ayatul Kursi in full when going to bed, understanding that protection comes from Allah alone.

There is no need to add unsupported rituals, repetition counts or promises beyond what the authentic narrations establish.
