Trump Said Iran’s Nuclear Programme Was Destroyed: Now the US Is Offering $20 Million for Information About It

If Iran’s nuclear programme was completely destroyed by American airstrikes, why is Washington now offering millions of dollars to find out more about it?

That question has triggered widespread ridicule of the Trump administration after the United States announced a reward of up to $20 million for intelligence about Iran’s nuclear facilities, equipment, scientists and their movements, despite President Donald Trump’s repeated declarations that American military strikes had already eliminated Tehran’s nuclear capabilities.

The announcement, circulated by US Central Command (CENTCOM), quickly attracted criticism from journalists, political commentators and analysts who questioned the apparent contradiction between Washington’s earlier claims of military success and its continuing search for information about the programme it insists was destroyed.

Under the US State Department’s Rewards for Justice programme, individuals providing relevant intelligence could receive up to $20 million, with possible relocation assistance.

The information Washington is seeking includes details about nuclear facilities, specialised equipment, individuals connected to Iran’s nuclear activities and their movements.

For critics, the announcement raises an uncomfortable question about the credibility of the administration’s previous statements, particularly after a costly military confrontation that Trump repeatedly portrayed as a decisive victory.

‘Didn’t You Already Destroy It?’

The reaction across social media was swift, with several prominent commentators questioning why the United States would need fresh intelligence about a nuclear programme that its president had repeatedly declared obliterated.

British broadcaster Piers Morgan responded to CENTCOM’s announcement with a blunt expression of disbelief: “What the hell?” His reaction, accompanied by multiple question marks, captured the confusion surrounding Washington’s latest intelligence appeal.

American political commentator Ron Filipkowski went further, questioning how the administration could justify seeking additional information after Trump had assured the public that Iran’s nuclear programme had been completely destroyed.

Filipkowski also drew attention to the human and financial costs of the war, including American casualties, the destruction of military bases and aircraft, depleted missile stockpiles and rising fuel prices.

His criticism centred on whether those sacrifices could be justified if Washington still lacked essential intelligence about the programme it had claimed to eliminate.

Ben Meiselas, co-founder of the MeidasTouch media network, delivered an equally scathing assessment of CENTCOM’s public communications.

He suggested that even if a hostile actor hacked the command’s social media account and began publishing messages in its name, the resulting embarrassment would hardly exceed the damage caused by CENTCOM’s own announcements.

American-Israeli political commentator Emily Schrader also questioned the intelligence request, responding sarcastically: “The programme that was destroyed?”

Political commentator Cenk Uygur reduced his assessment to a single word: “Embarrassing.”

Meanwhile, the social media account Molly Ploofkins mocked the idea that US Central Command needed assistance locating a nuclear programme Trump had claimed to have destroyed months earlier.

American commentator Brian Allen highlighted another contradiction, noting that Washington was offering millions for information about Iranian nuclear facilities, equipment, scientists and their movements after the White House had already announced the destruction of Iran’s nuclear infrastructure.

Although gathering intelligence about nuclear activities does not necessarily contradict claims that particular facilities were destroyed, critics argue that the breadth of Washington’s request sits uneasily alongside Trump’s sweeping declarations that Iran’s nuclear capabilities had been eliminated.

A $20 Million Reward Raises Questions About International Nuclear Inspections

The announcement also prompted a pointed comparison between Washington’s intelligence-gathering methods and the international inspection system previously used to monitor Iran’s nuclear activities.

Ali Vaez, director of the Iran Project at the International Crisis Group, contrasted the American reward with the estimated annual cost of inspections conducted by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

Vaez noted that Washington was prepared to offer as much as $20 million for information about Iran’s nuclear programme, while the annual cost of international nuclear inspections, which he estimated at approximately $10 million, suddenly appeared remarkably inexpensive.

His comparison drew attention to the difference between an established international verification mechanism and a financial incentive designed to encourage individuals to disclose sensitive information.

The criticism comes as Washington acknowledges that international inspectors have lost visibility over important aspects of Iran’s nuclear activities.

According to the US State Department, Iran’s non-compliance with its safeguards agreement with the IAEA has prevented the agency from accurately tracking information concerning the production and stockpiles of key nuclear components, including centrifuges.

The department did not specify precise criteria for determining what information would qualify an individual for the $20 million reward.

Nevertheless, the announcement’s scope extends beyond physical nuclear facilities to equipment, scientific personnel and their movements.

From ‘Complete Destruction’ to a Search for Intelligence

Journalist Ali Hashem drew attention to the timeline of Washington’s changing public messaging.

On 25 June 2025, Trump declared that American strikes had destroyed Iran’s nuclear facilities.

On 7 November 2026, the United States was publicly offering a substantial financial reward for information about the same nuclear programme, including facilities previously described as destroyed.

The contrast became a central theme of the backlash, with critics circulating the two announcements to question the administration’s account of what its military operations had actually achieved.

American political news website Mediaite also examined the controversy, reporting that critics had seized on Trump’s earlier declarations of victory to challenge the administration’s latest intelligence request.

The publication sought clarification from both the White House and the State Department regarding the apparent inconsistency.

Neither had responded to its requests for comment by the time its report was published on Friday evening.

The central issue is not simply whether particular nuclear installations were struck or damaged. Critics are questioning whether Washington’s public description of the military campaign accurately reflected its intelligence assessments of Iran’s remaining nuclear capabilities.

Trump’s repeated assertions that the programme had been completely eliminated left little room for uncertainty in his public messaging. The latest American intelligence appeal, however, demonstrates that Washington is still actively seeking information about Iran’s nuclear infrastructure and the people associated with it.

Trump Repeats His Victory Claims While Pursuing an Agreement With Tehran

Despite the criticism, Trump has continued to defend the results of the American military campaign against Iran.

On Friday evening, the president repeated his claims about the effectiveness of the strikes, arguing that Israel’s survival had depended on Washington’s military intervention.

“If we had not struck Iran, Israel would not exist today,” Trump said.

He also claimed that Tehran would have used nuclear weapons had it possessed them.

These assertions came as the president simultaneously acknowledged that his administration was pursuing diplomatic engagement with Iran.

Trump said Tehran was strongly interested in reaching an agreement to end the war, adding that his administration was currently dealing with Iranian officials and seeking a negotiated settlement.

The remarks placed two elements of Washington’s Iran policy alongside one another: an insistence that American military action had decisively destroyed Iran’s nuclear capabilities, and continuing diplomatic and intelligence efforts focused on the same programme.

For the administration’s critics, the $20 million reward has become an especially visible symbol of that tension.

Washington maintains that its strikes achieved their military objectives. Yet its latest appeal for intelligence has reopened questions about what American officials know regarding Iran’s nuclear capabilities, what remains uncertain, and whether Trump’s declarations of complete destruction went further than the available evidence could establish.
