A US senator who attended a classified congressional briefing has issued a stark warning about the Trump administration’s discussions of a possible new military attack on Iran after the midterm elections, describing the plan as “insane” and warning that another confrontation could trigger devastating escalation.
Democratic Senator Chris Murphy of Connecticut revealed during an interview that he was among a group of lawmakers recently briefed behind closed doors on the administration’s discussions about potentially resuming military operations against Iran.
“Their plan is insane,” Murphy said, expressing alarm over the nature of the military options being considered.
The senator warned that a renewed American attack on Iran could unleash a destructive escalation while undermining the United States’ commitment to the rule of law.
Murphy said he and several congressional colleagues had engaged in detailed discussions during the classified briefing about the nature of the potential military plan and how Washington might proceed if hostilities against Iran resumed.
His remarks suggest that the possibility of another military confrontation with Tehran is being examined within the Trump administration, although the senator did not publicly disclose the operational details discussed during the classified session.
The warning comes directly from a lawmaker who received a confidential briefing on the administration’s deliberations, rather than from outside speculation about Washington’s military intentions.
While Murphy’s account does not establish that President Donald Trump has authorised a new attack, it indicates that the administration has discussed military options involving Iran after the midterm elections, with at least one senator warning that the consequences could be catastrophic.
