Among the greatest events before the Day of Judgement is the blowing of the Trumpet.
The Qur’an calls it As-Sur, often translated as the Horn or Trumpet. When it is blown, the order of the world will end. The living will fall dead, then the Trumpet will be blown again and mankind will rise from the graves.
This is not folklore. It is from the clear texts of the Qur’an and authentic hadith.
Allah says in Surah Az-Zumar:
“The Trumpet will be blown and all those in the heavens and all those on the earth will fall dead, except those Allah wills to spare. Then it will be blown again and they will rise up at once, looking on.”
This verse establishes the core reality: a blowing that ends worldly life, then another blowing that brings resurrection.
Why Is It Called the Trumpet of Israfil?
The Qur’an mentions the Trumpet, but it does not name the angel assigned to it in that verse.
The name Israfil is established in authentic hadith. In Sahih Muslim, the Prophet ﷺ used to begin part of his night prayer by saying:
“O Allah, Lord of Jibril, Mika’il and Israfil, Creator of the heavens and the earth…”
This confirms Israfil as one of the great angels. Sunni scholars identify Israfil as the angel entrusted with the Trumpet, based on the hadith tradition and scholarly explanation.
So the careful wording is this: the Qur’an confirms the Trumpet, and authentic hadith confirms Israfil as a great angel. The assignment of the Trumpet to Israfil is the established Sunni understanding.
The Angel Is Already Waiting
One of the most striking hadith reports says the angel of the Trumpet is already prepared.
In Jami’ at-Tirmidhi, the Prophet ﷺ said:
“How can I be comfortable when the one with the Horn is holding it in his lips, his forehead leaning forward, waiting to be given permission to blow?”
The Companions asked what they should say. The Prophet ﷺ told them to say:
“Allah is sufficient for us, and what an excellent Protector He is. Upon Allah we rely.”
At-Tirmidhi classified the hadith as hasan.
This detail is powerful. The angel is not unprepared. He is waiting for the command.
The First Blowing
When Allah commands, the Trumpet will be blown.
The Qur’an describes the terror of that moment in Surah An-Naml:
“And on the Day the Trumpet will be blown, whoever is in the heavens and whoever is on the earth will be terrified, except whom Allah wills. And all will come to Him humbled.”
Another verse in Surah Az-Zumar states that those in the heavens and earth will fall dead, except whom Allah wills.
Some scholars discussed whether the terror and the death are part of the same blowing, or whether there is a separate blowing of terror before the blowing of death. The safer summary is this: the Qur’an confirms terror, death and resurrection connected to the Trumpet, while scholars differed over the exact sequence.
What is certain is that the first decisive blast will end the life of creation as Allah has decreed.
The First One to Hear It
A lesser-known detail appears in Sahih Muslim and in the explanations of Surah Az-Zumar.
The Prophet ﷺ said that when the Trumpet is blown, no one will hear it except that he will bend his neck to listen. The first person to hear it will be a man setting right the water trough for his camels. He will fall dead, then everyone else will fall dead.
This is a chilling detail.
The Hour will come while people are busy with ordinary life. Someone will be fixing a water trough. Others will be trading, building, eating, arguing, planning and living as if tomorrow is guaranteed.
Then the sound will come.
Between the Two Blowings
In Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim, Abu Hurayrah reported that the Prophet ﷺ said:
“Between the two blowings of the Trumpet there will be forty.”
The people asked Abu Hurayrah whether this meant forty days, forty months or forty years. He refused to specify.
That matters.
The number forty is authentically reported, but the exact unit is not specified in the hadith. A careful writer should not confidently say forty years, forty months or forty days unless quoting an interpretation. The authentic wording leaves it unspecified.
The Tailbone and Resurrection
The same hadith contains another detail many people overlook.
The Prophet ﷺ said that everything of the human body will decay except one bone: the coccyx, the tailbone. From it, the human body will be reconstructed on the Day of Resurrection.
In Sahih Muslim, the hadith also mentions that Allah will send down water from the sky, and people will grow like plants.
This is one of the most vivid descriptions of resurrection in authentic hadith.
The body decays.
One bone remains.
Then Allah recreates the human being.
The One who created man the first time will bring him back again.
The Second Blowing
The second blowing is the blowing of resurrection.
Allah says in Surah Ya-Sin:
“The Trumpet will be blown, then at once they will rush from the graves to their Lord.”
And in Surah An-Naba:
“The Day the Trumpet will be blown and you will come forth in crowds.”
This is the moment mankind returns to life.
People will come out of their graves, not slowly, not symbolically, but rushing toward the gathering before Allah.
Not Everyone Will Be Spared
Surah Az-Zumar says all in the heavens and earth will fall dead except whom Allah wills.
The Qur’an does not specify in that verse who will be exempted. Some scholars discussed whether the exception refers to certain angels, martyrs or others. But because the text does not give a final list, the safest position is to leave the matter with Allah.
The key point is that no one escapes the event except by Allah’s will.
The Trumpet Is Not a Metaphor
Some modern readers try to reduce the Trumpet to symbolism.
That is not the Sunni approach.
The Qur’an repeatedly mentions the Trumpet being blown. Authentic hadith mentions the angel waiting with the Horn, the interval between the two blowings, the death of creation, the rain before resurrection, and the bodies being reconstructed.
The texts speak of a real event from the unseen.
A Muslim does not need to know the physical mechanics of the Trumpet. We believe what Allah and His Messenger ﷺ informed us, and we stop where the evidence stops.
Why This Subject Matters
The Trumpet is not mentioned to feed curiosity only.
It is a warning.
Life can look stable. Nations can look powerful. People can act as if the world will continue forever. But one command from Allah will end the entire order of worldly life.
The angel is waiting.
The command has not yet been given.
The delay is mercy, not forgetfulness.
That is why the Prophet ﷺ taught the Companions to respond with reliance upon Allah:
“Allah is sufficient for us, and what an excellent Protector He is.”
Conclusion
The Trumpet of Israfil is one of the greatest realities of the unseen.
The Qur’an confirms that the Trumpet will be blown, causing death, terror and resurrection by Allah’s command. Authentic hadith tells us that the angel with the Horn is already prepared, waiting for permission to blow. Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim confirm that between the two blowings there will be “forty”, without specifying the unit, and that the human body will be reconstructed from the tailbone after Allah sends down rain.
The message is clear.
The world will not end by accident.
It will end by command.
The graves will not remain closed forever.
They will open by command.
And when the Trumpet is blown, every false sense of security will collapse before the reality of Allah’s promise.
