For more than two years and eight months, the Gaza Strip has endured what many describe as one of the gravest humanitarian catastrophes of modern times. Reduced by bombardment and siege to an area that is barely habitable, more than 2.25 million people continue to struggle for survival amid widespread destruction, displacement and loss.
Families have lost their homes, livelihoods and loved ones, while tens of thousands have been killed. Food, medicine and clean drinking water remain scarce, and even access to water for basic hygiene has become a daily challenge. More than 80 per cent of Gaza’s homes have been completely destroyed, while much of the remaining housing has suffered severe damage.
Healthcare and education have also collapsed under the weight of the war. Hospitals and medical centres have been devastated, while schools and universities have largely ceased functioning, with many now serving as overcrowded shelters for displaced families.
The financial system has similarly been crippled. Since the beginning of the war, no new banknotes have entered Gaza, while the closure of banking services and the suspension of thousands of bank accounts have left many residents unable to access their own money. The article argues that these measures have further tightened economic pressure on Gaza’s population.
Calls to Turn Against the Resistance
Against this backdrop, the article examines what it describes as “suspicious” calls urging Palestinians to stage demonstrations demanding the removal of the resistance from public life and the surrender of its weapons.
According to the article, many of the leading figures behind these campaigns had already left Gaza after the war began and later established media groups advocating what it describes as the transfer of control over the Strip after military efforts had failed to achieve that objective.
The article also alleges that social media campaigns were coordinated alongside statements issued by armed groups operating in areas controlled by Israeli forces in northern and eastern Gaza. It claims these groups openly encouraged confrontation with the resistance and promised financial, military and logistical support to anyone willing to challenge it.
Sources cited in the article further claim that these calls for demonstrations were accompanied by preparations for coordinated attacks on security and civilian sites, including mosques, shelters and individuals associated with the resistance. They also allege that armed incursions by affiliated militias were planned to coincide with the unrest in an attempt to secure symbolic military gains.
Three Objectives Behind the Campaign
The article argues that these developments served three principal objectives.
1. Creating Internal Division
First, it argues that the goal was to ignite internal conflict within Gaza by encouraging public anger over worsening humanitarian conditions to be directed towards the resistance rather than the occupation.
The article claims that, throughout the war, covert operations involving killings and kidnappings were falsely attributed to resistance factions in an effort to provoke conflict between major Palestinian families and the resistance. It maintains that these attempts ultimately failed after the resistance uncovered those responsible.
2. Distracting the Resistance
Secondly, the article argues that provoking widespread protests would have forced resistance groups to divert resources away from rebuilding their capabilities and reorganising their ranks.
It contends that, despite the continuing air strikes, the relative stability that remains in parts of Gaza has allowed civilians to recover small aspects of daily life. According to the article, creating internal unrest would have undermined that stability while placing additional pressure on resistance organisations already operating under exceptionally difficult security conditions.
3. Shifting Responsibility
The third objective, according to the article, was to shift responsibility for Gaza’s humanitarian crisis away from Israel by portraying the resistance’s refusal to surrender its weapons as the primary reason for the continued suffering.
The article argues that Israel has consistently attempted to deny responsibility for the destruction in Gaza while attributing major incidents, including attacks on civilian sites, to Palestinian factions. It further contends that subsequent journalistic and legal investigations challenged many of these narratives, prompting renewed efforts to redirect blame through media campaigns and calls for public demonstrations.
Public Response
According to the article, these efforts ultimately failed.
It argues that public awareness, together with extensive security measures undertaken by the resistance, prevented attempts to create instability inside Gaza. Demonstrations against the resistance reportedly attracted only limited participation, while pro resistance gatherings were held in several areas, particularly during funeral processions for those killed during the war.
The article also states that security operations intensified in areas near frontline positions where intelligence reportedly indicated preparations for incursions by armed groups. It claims that resistance fighters confronted these groups despite Israeli air support and forced them to withdraw after sustaining significant losses.
Alongside these security measures, the article says the resistance launched public awareness campaigns warning residents against what it described as attempts to exploit Gaza’s humanitarian suffering while ignoring the role of the occupation.
Conclusion
The article concludes that the campaign to weaken the resistance and erode its public support failed to achieve its objectives.
It argues that attempts to create internal division left no lasting impact on Palestinian social cohesion and that Gaza’s population continued to demonstrate commitment to what they regard as their national cause. Despite immense hardship and continuing losses, the article concludes that Palestinians remain determined to defend their rights and reject efforts to abandon them, regardless of the sacrifices required.
