Has Tucker Carlson Abandoned Trump and Reconsidered Islam? Here’s Why It Matters

Few media figures in the United States embody the ideological contradictions of modern conservatism as clearly as Tucker Carlson. Over the past decade, Carlson evolved from a conventional conservative television host into one of the most influential voices within the “Make America Great Again” movement surrounding President Donald Trump.

In recent years, however, Carlson has gradually distanced himself from key elements of Trump’s worldview, particularly on war, Israel, Iran, and America’s role abroad.

The question today is no longer simply whether Carlson is moving away from Trump. It is whether this shift also reflects a retreat from the anti-Muslim sentiments that have long been embedded in parts of American conservatism.

From Conservative Broadcaster to Populist Icon

Carlson’s career is well documented in American media circles. He studied at Trinity College and began his career among traditional conservatives. He worked at CNN and MSNBC before finding his most influential platform at Fox News, where his programme, Tucker Carlson Tonight, became one of the highest-rated cable news talk shows in the United States.

The BBC, CNN and numerous other media organisations have described him as one of the chief architects of populist nationalism and one of the defining media voices of the Trump era.

The Old Tucker Carlson

Carlson’s political views combined anti-elite populism, hostility towards international liberalism, opposition to immigration, and a foreign policy centred on the principle of “America First”.

He became one of the strongest defenders of Trump’s nationalist movement, particularly on immigration, globalisation and attacks on what the MAGA movement often refers to as the “deep state”.

At the height of Trump’s rise, Carlson’s nightly programme frequently served a role that went beyond political commentary. It became a platform that reinforced the ideological foundations of Trump’s movement itself.

Religiously, Carlson identifies with the Episcopal Church and increasingly speaks in openly civilisational and Christian terms. In interviews and speeches, he has repeatedly framed politics as a spiritual battle concerning Western civilisation, moral decline and cultural identity.

This framing often intersected with highly controversial remarks about Islam and Muslim societies.

Accusations of Anti-Muslim Rhetoric

Critics have long accused Carlson of promoting anti-Muslim narratives.

In 2019, old recordings resurfaced in which he made derogatory remarks about certain Muslim populations and spoke dismissively about those societies.

Advocacy groups, including Muslim rights organisations, accused him of reinforcing anti-Muslim stereotypes, particularly through his attacks on Muslim politicians such as Ilhan Omar.

Carlson repeatedly portrayed Islam as a civilisational challenge to the West.

According to numerous media analyses and reports by watchdog organisations, his programme regularly featured guests who argued that Islam was fundamentally incompatible with liberal democracy.

His rhetoric often echoed fears that became widespread after the September 11 attacks, when extremism was frequently conflated with Muslim communities more broadly.

Even after later rebranding himself as an anti-war commentator, critics argued that his earlier rhetoric had already helped normalise suspicion towards Muslims and immigrants.

The Break with Trump

Carlson’s trajectory became noticeably more complex over the past two years, particularly as disagreements emerged over Israel and foreign intervention.

Historically, mainstream American conservatives, especially within Republican leadership circles, have strongly supported Israel in foreign policy.

Carlson initially reflected this consensus.

However, as the wars in Gaza intensified and tensions with Iran escalated, he increasingly positioned himself against military escalation and against what he described as the influence of neo-conservatives in Washington.

This shift produced visible tensions between Carlson and Trump.

While Trump’s movement originally presented itself as sceptical of endless wars and foreign interventions, Carlson accused parts of the MAGA establishment of abandoning those principles.

American media outlets, including NPR, documented growing divisions among pro-Trump commentators regarding support for Israeli military operations and the prospect of war with Iran.

Carlson became one of the most prominent conservative voices warning against American military intervention in Iran.

He argued that entering another war would betray the promises associated with “America First”, the slogan that energised Trump’s electoral base in 2016.

As a result, Carlson increasingly found himself at odds not only with traditional Republicans, but at times with Trump himself.

A Change of Heart or a Change of Priorities?

Carlson’s evolution has puzzled both supporters and critics.

Some interpret it as ideological maturity and a delayed recognition that demonising entire religious communities contributed to disastrous wars such as Iraq and Afghanistan.

Others argue that his position has less to do with solidarity with Muslims and more to do with strategic nationalism.

Under this interpretation, Carlson does not embrace pluralism. Rather, he opposes foreign wars because he believes they weaken the United States domestically.

His Criticism of Israel

Carlson’s criticism of Israel has become one of the most controversial aspects of his repositioning.

Pro-Israel conservatives have accused him of fuelling anti-Israel sentiment on the American right.

Commentators within conservative institutions argue that Carlson increasingly portrays American policy in the Middle East as excessively influenced by Israeli interests at the expense of American priorities.

The backlash has exposed a major fault line within the MAGA movement itself.

Does “America First” require unconditional alignment with Israeli strategic objectives?

Or does it imply a more isolationist nationalism that questions all foreign commitments?

Trump himself has appeared increasingly frustrated by Carlson’s opposition.

Conservative media outlets have reported growing disagreements between the two men, particularly over Iran and military escalation.

Carlson’s criticism became sharper whenever Trump appeared open to more aggressive military options against Iran.

At times, Carlson suggested that parts of the MAGA coalition had been absorbed by the same interventionist forces Trump once condemned.

Has Carlson Really Moved Away from Islamophobia?

Carlson occupies a unique symbolic position within the American right.

He is not merely a political commentator. He has become a compass for populist conservatives.

When Carlson changes direction, significant segments of the populist right often move with him.

But does this represent a genuine departure from Islamophobia?

Several examples suggest that Carlson’s transformation may be less a rejection of civilisational anxieties and more a reordering of nationalist priorities.

For example, Carlson has increasingly praised certain Muslim-majority societies, particularly in the Gulf region, for what he sees as their commitment to religion, family structures, social cohesion and public morality.

In interviews and commentary, he has contrasted cities such as Dubai with what he describes as the decline of American cities, rising crime, social fragmentation and dominant secular liberalism.

In this sense, Carlson sometimes appears more impressed by aspects of conservative Muslim societies than by liberal Western ones.

Yet this admiration remains selective and pragmatic.

It is not rooted in a theological or cultural openness towards Islam, nor in an embrace of multicultural coexistence.

Rather, it reflects Carlson’s broader criticism of Western liberal modernity.

Certain Muslim societies become useful examples of “traditional values” resisting secular liberalism.

That is very different from recognising Muslims as equal participants in pluralistic democratic societies.

Moreover, despite softening some of his rhetoric regarding Iran or criticising indiscriminate hostility towards Muslims abroad, Carlson still portrays mass immigration, including immigration from Muslim-majority countries, as a threat to cultural cohesion and national identity.

This remains a narrow civilisational perspective rather than a pluralistic one.

Likewise, Carlson’s opposition to American intervention in the Middle East often focuses less on the suffering of people in the region and more on the costs borne by Americans through wasted money, military casualties, border insecurity, inflation and elite corruption.

This is an anti-war nationalist position, not necessarily an anti-Islamophobic one.

A Different Formulation, Not Necessarily a Different Worldview

There is little doubt that Carlson’s recent rhetoric differs from his earlier statements about Muslims.

His criticism of mocking Islam, his condemnation of indiscriminate hostility towards Muslim societies, and even his suggestions that extremist groups are not the primary threat facing the United States all represent significant rhetorical shifts.

Furthermore, Carlson increasingly distinguishes between opposition to war and hostility towards entire peoples or religions.

When criticising war with Iran, he often emphasises the humanity of ordinary Iranians and warns against repeating the dehumanisation that accompanied the Iraq War.

Nevertheless, it may be premature to describe Carlson as genuinely sympathetic to Islam in a theological, cultural or pluralistic sense.

Much of his language still places civilisations into opposing categories.

His worldview remains rooted in a conservative Christian civilisation that sees Western identity as culturally distinct and implicitly threatened by demographic and ideological change.

Moreover, Carlson’s rhetorical shift is unfolding within a broader American political environment where anti-Muslim sentiment remains deeply entrenched in media and political discourse.

One commentator changing his tone does not erase decades of narratives that linked Islam with violence, authoritarianism or civilisational decline.

An Important Political Shift

Carlson’s evolution remains politically significant because it reveals a growing division within the populist right.

One faction remains attached to the civilisational conflict narratives that emerged after September 11.

Another increasingly believes that foreign wars, particularly those fought on behalf of allies abroad, are catastrophic distractions from domestic crises.

In this sense, Carlson may represent a shift from interventionist nationalism to defensive nationalism rather than a genuine liberation from Islamophobia.

Muslims are no longer automatically portrayed as the central enemy because other anxieties, such as economic decline, distrust of elites, demographic change and geopolitical overreach, have become more politically urgent among sections of the American right.

Ironically, this has created an unusual political convergence.

Some anti-war voices on the left and isolationist voices on the right now occasionally use similar language regarding military intervention, Gaza, Iran and militarised foreign policy, despite continuing to disagree profoundly on immigration, multiculturalism and civil rights.

So, does distancing oneself from Trump mean abandoning Islamophobia?

Not necessarily.

Carlson’s recent positions suggest that one can oppose war with Iran, criticise Israeli policies and even condemn anti-Muslim rhetoric without fully abandoning the civilisational anxieties that shaped earlier conservative discourse.

His evolution reflects a transformation within the MAGA movement from interventionist nationalism to defensive nationalism, not necessarily towards pluralism.

Politics, however, is rarely shaped by purity. It evolves through trends and shifts.

The fact that one of the most influential conservative voices in America can now publicly say, “No president should mock Islam”, marks a striking departure from the political climate that dominated the United States after September 11.

Whether this will lead to a genuine re-evaluation of Islam and Muslims, or whether it is merely a tactical repositioning within a divided populist movement, remains an open question.
