International outrage continues to intensify against the Israeli occupation following the circulation of shocking footage showing the abuse of more than 170 activists from the “Steadfastness Flotilla” heading toward the Gaza Strip. The activists were subjected to degrading treatment by Israeli security forces in an incident that triggered widespread condemnation, particularly after Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir openly boasted about the footage in a display widely described as openly racist.
The circulated videos showed activists handcuffed and forced to kneel in humiliating positions while being subjected to verbal and physical abuse by security personnel. Laughter, mockery, and threats of further mistreatment and detention could also be heard in the footage. Observers described the scenes as exposing the true face of occupation policies, not only toward Palestinians, but even toward those attempting peaceful humanitarian efforts to break the blockade imposed on Gaza.
The incident quickly escalated into a diplomatic crisis, prompting several European countries to adopt stronger measures ranging from summoning Israeli ambassadors to issuing sharply worded condemnations. The backlash even reached the United States ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee, who is known for his staunch Zionist positions and longstanding support for the occupation state. Huckabee described the abuses as “humiliating and internationally unacceptable”.
The scenes and the global reaction surrounding them reflect the rapid deterioration of Israel’s international image after the gradual collapse of the narrative it spent decades promoting as a civilised, democratic, and humanitarian state. The war on Gaza, along with repeated violations that followed, has increasingly exposed the racist and violent reality of the occupation state and its political mentality. This has deepened Tel Aviv’s international isolation and widened the trust gap between Israel and many of its traditional allies, particularly across Europe.
International Anger Intensifies
The footage sparked a wave of international anger that pushed several governments to take diplomatic action against Tel Aviv, most notably through formally summoning Israeli ambassadors for reprimand and protest. Nine countries took this step: Canada, Belgium, France, Italy, Portugal, the Netherlands, Spain, Australia, and New Zealand.
Several European capitals also adopted unusually strong language in response to the incident. British Home Secretary Yvette Cooper expressed “deep shock” over the footage, while France described the actions of the Israeli minister as “unacceptable”. French lawmakers and left wing political figures called on the government to act urgently to secure the release of activists detained by Israel “illegally”.
Germany described the scenes as “completely unacceptable”, while the Italian government stated that the treatment of activists attempting to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza was “entirely unacceptable”.
Condemnation extended beyond Europe. South Korean President Lee Jae Myung described the incident as “a blatant crossing of all boundaries”, while Turkey accused Benjamin Netanyahu’s government of embodying a “brutal and criminal mentality” in its treatment of activists and international solidarity groups.
Qatar’s Foreign Ministry also called on the international community to take urgent action to halt what it described as “Israeli provocations”, stressing the need to hold the Israeli government accountable for its “ongoing crimes and violations” and to end policies of impunity.
Western Media Warns Israel’s Image Is Collapsing
Western media outlets launched parallel criticism alongside official diplomatic pressure, with numerous newspapers and broadcasters describing the footage as a defining moment that deepened Israel’s image crisis internationally and exposed the rapid erosion of its longstanding narrative before global public opinion.
The Guardian stated that the scenes would “increase moral and political pressure” on the Israeli government, warning that the treatment of European activists and international solidarity groups would intensify public anger across Europe, especially amid growing criticism related to the war on Gaza.
The New York Times argued that the crisis had moved beyond the detention of activists and had become a broader test of Israel’s image before Western audiences, particularly following the widespread circulation of the footage across media platforms and social networks.
French newspaper Le Monde focused on what it described as the “humiliating nature” of the scenes, stating that the footage strengthened accusations against Israel regarding “excessive use of force and retaliatory treatment of solidarity activists”.
The BBC reported that the angry European responses reflected a gradual shift in the political and media climate in the West toward Israeli policies, particularly after the devastation and civilian casualties resulting from the Gaza war.
CNN also highlighted growing debate within the United States itself, with increasing voices arguing that such scenes “damage Israel’s image more than they serve its security”. Meanwhile, Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera described Itamar Ben Gvir as “the most extreme figure” within the Israeli government.
Netanyahu Government Faces Growing Crisis
Netanyahu’s government has found itself trapped in a major political and media crisis following the publication of the footage, which generated outrage even among figures traditionally supportive of Israel, including the US ambassador in Tel Aviv.
For years, the ambassador defended Israeli policies in Gaza and consistently adopted the Israeli government’s narrative in international forums. However, the footage prompted him this time to condemn the incident, describing the conduct of the Israeli National Security Minister as “disgraceful and internationally unacceptable”. His reaction reflected the scale of embarrassment these scenes caused for Israel’s image before global public opinion.
The circulated footage also exposed, in an unprecedented manner, the violent and degrading nature of Israeli practices against unarmed civilian activists who posed no security threat and were acting from humanitarian motives in solidarity with the besieged population of Gaza. This significantly weakened Israel’s traditional narrative, which has long justified abuses under the banner of “self defence”.
The growing international outrage and the increasing number of condemnatory actions appear to have pushed Netanyahu to intervene directly and order the deportation of the activists from the occupied territories in an attempt to contain the escalating fallout. At the same time, criticism emerged from within the Israeli government itself, blaming Ben Gvir for damaging Israel’s image and deepening its international media and human rights crisis.
Ben Gvir’s conduct, driven by extremist rhetoric and provocative behaviour, has effectively become a destructive force against the narrative that Israeli propaganda spent decades attempting to establish globally. This has intensified fears inside Israel and among its allies over the long term consequences for the state’s international standing and reputation.
Gaza Exposes the World’s Double Standards
The abuses faced by the activists aboard the “Steadfastness Flotilla” cannot be compared to what the people of Gaza have endured throughout two years of war. Civilians in Gaza have faced widespread violations described by international human rights organisations as amounting to crimes against humanity, including mass killings, starvation, forced displacement, arrests, and severe abuses against civilians, all amid clear international failure to stop the humanitarian catastrophe or hold those responsible accountable.
When the rapid European outrage and swift international reaction to the mistreatment of activists holding Western citizenship are compared with the silence, or limited action, regarding the suffering of more than two million Palestinians subjected to months of war, siege, and large scale violations, the crisis of double standards governing Western discourse on justice and human rights becomes impossible to ignore.
The stark contrast between the reactions in both cases has reignited fundamental questions regarding the universality of the principles the West claims to uphold concerning equality and human dignity, particularly amid a growing and demonstrable perception that Palestinian lives do not carry the same value within Western political and moral frameworks.
Since the beginning of the war on Gaza, it has become increasingly clear that the international system is facing a historic moment of exposure that has revealed deep contradictions within the contemporary global order. The war has gradually shattered the idealised image long promoted regarding international justice and human rights.
For this reason, the war on Gaza has been described as one of the most revealing conflicts in modern history, not only because of the scale of the humanitarian catastrophe, but because it has redrawn the boundaries of global political and moral discourse and led many to believe that the world after this war will not resemble the world before it.
Ultimately, Gaza and its people have succeeded, through the justice of their humanitarian and political cause, in exposing the true face of the Israeli occupation and dismantling much of the narrative Tel Aviv spent decades building before the world. This exposure has increasingly isolated the Zionist entity in the eyes of international public opinion.
This growing shift in global awareness would not have been possible without the steadfastness of the people of Gaza, whether those who remained under bombardment and siege or those who sacrificed their lives to keep the Palestinian cause alive in the conscience of people and on the agenda of international human rights organisations. These immense sacrifices have played a central role in reshaping global awareness of the Palestinian cause, a shift increasingly reflected in declining levels of international support for the Zionist entity alongside growing global sympathy for Palestine and the legitimate rights of its people.
