Over recent months, a new form of digital gambling has rapidly emerged through online betting applications. But instead of wagering on sporting events or weather forecasts, many users have turned towards betting on wars, military operations and major geopolitical developments.
The controversy surrounding war related betting intensified with the emergence of traders allegedly possessing insider information about future US government and military actions. According to a report by American broadcaster CBS News, these individuals used confidential knowledge to place highly targeted bets on specific military and political events, generating enormous profits in the process.
At the centre of the controversy is Polymarket, a major digital prediction platform that hosted extensive betting activity tied to US military operations, ranging from the potential arrest of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro to the war on Iran.
The bets reportedly extended far beyond publicly available analysis or predictable geopolitical trends. Participants wagered on highly detailed scenarios, including the timing of attacks, methods of military escalation and even the political fate of world leaders.
A Billion Dollar Market Built on War
According to CBS News, the market surrounding bets on US military operations surpassed $1 billion in recent months.
The wagers covered events linked to Maduro, the Iran war, direct strike timelines, deterrence measures and broader geopolitical escalation scenarios.
A separate report from CBS News revealed that nine accounts alone generated profits exceeding $2.4 million through Polymarket by exclusively betting on US military operations. The accounts reportedly achieved a success rate exceeding 98 per cent across more than 80 bets.
Nicolas Vaiman, chief executive and co founder of blockchain analytics firm Bubble Maps, said the activity revealed a connected and coordinated pattern rather than isolated incidents.
“This is the craziest pattern we have found so far. Luck alone cannot explain it,” he said.
Insider Information and Military Operations
The case of US Army First Sergeant Gannon Kane VanDyke has become one of the clearest examples of how insider military knowledge could potentially be transformed into massive profits.
According to the report, VanDyke used a VPN service to conceal his identity before placing bets totalling approximately $34,000. Among them were six bets made the day before an operation involving the attempted arrest of Maduro, an operation in which VanDyke himself reportedly participated.
The bets generated profits exceeding $400,000.
As a result, the US Department of Justice filed multiple federal charges against him. VanDyke denied all accusations and pleaded not guilty, according to CBS News.
Independent American lawyer Rob Schwartz, a former official at the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, argued that using confidential military information for betting purposes falls under insider trading practices, similar to the illegal use of confidential corporate information under US law.
Iran War Fuels Betting Platform Boom
A report published in April by Australian publication The Conversation stated that betting markets linked to warfare expanded dramatically alongside the outbreak of war involving Iran.
The report noted that Polymarket became the primary platform driving this trend.
Meanwhile, British newspaper The Guardian reported that Polymarket’s profits reached approximately $400 million in July 2024 following years of activity in prediction and betting markets.
However, with the escalation surrounding Iran, the platform’s overall valuation surged beyond $15 billion as trading activity intensified sharply.
According to The Guardian, weekly trading volumes approached $1 billion by June, supported by investments from major financial firms, including the investment fund linked to American billionaire Peter Thiel, a known ally of President Donald Trump.
The report also noted that Intercontinental Exchange, owner of the New York Stock Exchange, invested more than $600 million into the company.
How Polymarket Preserves User Anonymity
Although numerous digital betting platforms operate globally, Polymarket has distinguished itself through a combination of transparency and near complete anonymity.
According to CBS News, the platform publicly displays betting data while simultaneously protecting the identities of participants.
Polymarket relies heavily on cryptocurrencies, allowing users to place bets and withdraw profits directly through digital assets, making financial tracking significantly more difficult across multiple jurisdictions.
The platform also uses a highly simplified interface. In many cases, wagers are presented as straightforward yes or no questions, allowing users anywhere in the world to participate anonymously without revealing their identities to other participants.
As a result, tracking users or identifying bettors often requires direct cooperation from the company itself alongside formal legal authorisation.
This prompted the company to release an official statement pledging to work towards identifying the nine accounts accused of profiting from recent US military operations through the platform, according to CBS News. Under US law, betting on military operations is considered illegal.
Who Really Controls the Betting Markets?
The Guardian reported that several investment firms have increasingly begun relying on data generated by platforms such as Polymarket to gauge public expectations and geopolitical risk.
Even major financial institutions such as Goldman Sachs reportedly referenced Polymarket outcomes regarding the US Iran confrontation, while Nasdaq has explored adopting similar forecasting mechanisms.
Some participants have reportedly moved beyond financial speculation into direct intimidation.
According to reports, certain bettors threatened an Israeli journalist in an attempt to pressure him into altering public statements regarding the extent of damage caused by Iranian attacks on Israel in order to protect their betting profits.
The growing influence of these platforms raises a broader question about who ultimately shapes the betting environment and drives millions of users towards speculative wealth.
If certain actors possess access to confidential information regarding future US military actions, they may also possess the ability to directly transform that information into profitable betting trends followed by millions around the world.
