JD Vance has stated that the United States sees a viable pathway towards a “major deal” with Iran, placing the responsibility for the next move squarely on Tehran.
Speaking to Fox News, Vance indicated that recent negotiations held in Islamabad were not a failure. He noted that Iranian representatives showed some level of movement towards US positions during the talks, although these concessions fell short of Washington’s expectations.
Core US Conditions: Full Nuclear Rollback
Vance emphasised that the central requirement for any agreement is the complete dismantling of Iran’s uranium enrichment capability. He stated clearly that the United States is seeking the total removal of enriched uranium from Iranian territory.
Beyond nuclear restrictions, Washington has tied any potential agreement to Iran abandoning efforts to develop nuclear weapons and ceasing what it describes as support for terrorism.
Negotiation Status: Progress Without Resolution
According to Vance, the outcome of the Islamabad discussions reflects partial progress rather than a concluded agreement. He reiterated that the next phase depends entirely on Iran’s willingness to take further steps.
He characterised Iranian negotiators as highly resilient, warning that any scenario in which Iran acquires nuclear weapons would impose severe global consequences.
US Strategic Position: Controlled De-escalation
Vance also claimed that the United States has achieved its operational objectives on the ground, positioning itself to begin a gradual wind-down of the conflict. He stressed that Washington’s preference is to conclude the situation through a comprehensive and successful agreement.
He added that Donald Trump is not inclined to prolong the current trajectory, signalling a push towards a definitive resolution.
Strait of Hormuz: A Non-Negotiable Condition
On the issue of the Strait of Hormuz, Vance made it clear that uninterrupted access remains a critical US demand. Any Iranian move to restrict or close the passage would trigger an immediate and fundamental shift in Washington’s response.
He further noted that restrictions on oil flow through the strait are exerting economic pressure on Iran.
Energy Pressures and Domestic Impact
Addressing rising energy costs, Vance acknowledged the economic strain on American households. He stated that the administration is engaged in intensive negotiations aimed at delivering a near-term resolution to stabilise the situation.
