Iran’s Khatam al-Anbiya military headquarters announced on Saturday that a newly deployed air defence system was used to target and bring down a US fighter jet on Friday. Iranian state media quoted a spokesperson stating that the country is moving decisively towards achieving full control over its airspace.
The development marks a significant escalation, particularly as it represents the first confirmed incident of a US fighter jet being downed since Washington launched its war on Iran on 28 February.
Rescue Operation Complicated by Pilot Survival
A US official confirmed to Reuters that a fighter jet was shot down over Iran, with a search and rescue operation recovering one of the two crew members who ejected from the aircraft. The fate of the second crew member remains unclear.
The possibility that a US serviceman is still alive داخل Iranian territory significantly heightens the stakes for Washington. It introduces a dual operational challenge for the US military, which must balance efforts to recover personnel behind enemy lines while safeguarding forces involved in high-risk rescue missions.
Contradictions With Previous US Claims
The incident follows remarks made by US President Donald Trump at the White House just over a week earlier, in which he claimed that Iranian forces had been so weakened that American aircraft were effectively operating freely over Tehran and other parts of the country without resistance.
However, the downing of a US fighter jet challenges that narrative and suggests that Iran retains operational air defence capabilities capable of contesting US aerial dominance.
Expanding Military Engagement Across the Region
According to US officials speaking to Reuters, two Black Hawk helicopters came under Iranian fire while participating in the rescue mission but were able to exit Iranian airspace. Additionally, an A-10 Warthog aircraft was reportedly struck and crashed in Kuwait, although the pilot successfully ejected.
White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt confirmed that President Trump had been briefed on the situation, without providing further operational details.
Meanwhile, Iranian authorities called on civilians to assist in locating any survivors, as images circulating on social media purportedly showed debris from the downed fighter jet.
US officials identified the aircraft as a two-seat F-15E, with one pilot and one weapons systems officer onboard. It remains unclear which of the two has been rescued, and no further details have been disclosed regarding how the rescue operation was conducted.
