A video widely circulated across social media platforms shows a man in a military flight suit raising his hands in apparent surrender. The footage quickly gained hundreds of thousands of views, with users claiming it captured the moment a US pilot was detained inside Iran.
In the clip, the individual does not appear to resist or attempt escape. Another person approaches him, seemingly to film or photograph the scene. The setting resembles an informal civilian environment rather than a structured military capture operation.
Several accounts claimed the footage documented the capture of an American pilot after his F-35 aircraft was shot down داخل Iranian territory, amid escalating tensions between the United States and Iran. Many posts asserted the incident occurred on a recent Friday, presenting the video as evidence of a new development on the ground.
Other accounts went further, altering the footage to resemble a breaking news segment attributed to Al Jazeera, falsely presenting it as exclusive material obtained by the network.
Verification Reveals Old Footage
A review by Al Jazeera’s open-source verification unit found that the video is not related to the current events in Iran. Reverse image searches confirmed that the footage is old and had previously circulated during tensions between India and Pakistan.
At that time, it was shared as documenting the capture of an Indian pilot after his aircraft was downed inside Pakistani territory. A visual comparison between the older and current versions shows that the same clip was reused without meaningful alteration, with only the narrative changed to fit the current conflict.
This reflects a recurring pattern in digital misinformation, where existing visual content is repurposed and reframed to mislead audiences during periods of heightened tension.
Conflicting Reports on Downed Aircraft
The video’s circulation coincided with an announcement by Iran’s Revolutionary Guard claiming it had shot down an advanced US F-35 fighter jet over Markazi province. This marked the second such claim within less than 12 hours.
However, the US military acknowledged the loss of an aircraft but stated that it was an F-15E, according to reports cited by the Associated Press.
Iranian air defence, under the Khatam al-Anbiya command, reportedly targeted the aircraft while it was flying over central Iran.
Meanwhile, US media reported that one of the two pilots on board had been located during a search and rescue operation following the incident. Iranian authorities also announced a reward for information regarding the aircraft’s crew.
The F-15E is a heavier, non-stealth fighter jet, making it more detectable compared to stealth aircraft, particularly when carrying combat payloads.
