The office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Saturday denied claims circulating on social media alleging his assassination in an Iranian response to American and Israeli strikes, describing the reports as “false news”.
The denial came in response to an inquiry from Anadolu Agency regarding the growing claims that Netanyahu had been “assassinated”. The prime minister’s office replied: “These are false reports. The prime minister is well.”
These rumours coincided with similar reports circulating about Iran’s new Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei, amid his absence from public appearances since assuming the position following the death of his father, Ali Khamenei, who was killed in Israeli air raids targeting his residence in Tehran on Friday, 28 February.
Reuters previously quoted an Israeli official as saying that an Israeli intelligence assessment indicated Mojtaba had sustained minor injuries during the war, which could explain his absence from public view so far.
The New York Times also reported, citing three unnamed Iranian officials, that Mojtaba “sustained injuries, including some to his legs, but remains conscious and is hiding in a heavily fortified location with limited communications”.
Meanwhile, an Iranian official told Reuters that the new Iranian leader had suffered minor injuries but continues to perform his duties, without providing further details about when the injuries occurred.
Israel and the United States continue to carry out wide scale attacks against Iran, resulting in the killing and wounding of hundreds of people, including Ali Khamenei, the defence minister, the commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, and other military leaders, according to the available information.
In response, Iran continues to launch missiles and drones toward Israel, while also targeting what it describes as American bases and interests in the region.
