Sources speaking to the American network CNN have revealed that the United States Central Intelligence Agency is working to arm Kurdish forces as part of efforts aimed at fuelling a popular uprising inside Iran.
According to the sources, the administration of US President Donald Trump is conducting intensive discussions with Iranian opposition groups and Kurdish leaders in Iraq regarding the provision of military support.
Iranian Strikes in Iraqi Kurdistan
On Tuesday, Iran’s Tasnim News Agency reported that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps targeted sites belonging to what it described as “hostile and opposing groups” in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq.
The report claimed that the groups were planning to infiltrate Iran and carry out operations inside the country. According to the agency, the locations were destroyed following a directed intelligence operation involving the launch of 30 drones.
Attacks on US Military Bases in Erbil
Meanwhile, an Iraqi faction known as Saraya Awliya al-Dam claimed responsibility for a double attack targeting American military bases in Erbil province within the Kurdistan Region of Iraq.
In a statement, the group said its fighters carried out the operation using a short range missile known as the “Al-Qari’” missile, alongside a coordinated strike involving what it described as a swarm of drones.
The faction stated that the attack was carried out “in retaliation for the blood” of prominent figures, foremost among them Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, and in support of Iran.
On Saturday, the Counter Terrorism Unit affiliated with the Kurdistan Regional Government announced that several attack drones and missiles used in the assault on Erbil International Airport had been neutralised.
