Jeffrey Epstein was an American Jewish billionaire convicted of sexual crimes. Born in 1953, he worked in several fields, including teaching and investment banking. He became widely known for his connections with global celebrities and political figures who were accused of involvement in his underage prostitution network. Epstein built this network after amassing significant wealth through his financial career. United States authorities arrested him and he later died in his prison cell in 2019.
Epstein was a figure deeply connected to American elites and was known for his relationship with former president Donald Trump, who once described him as “a terrific guy”.
Early Life and Background of Jeffrey Epstein
Jeffrey Edward Epstein was born in Brooklyn, New York, on 20 January 1953. He was the eldest son of Seymour and Paula Epstein, a family of Jewish immigrants.
His father worked as a groundskeeper and gardener for the New York City Parks Department. The family lived in “Sea Gate”, a middle-class neighbourhood located on the western edge of Coney Island in Brooklyn.
Early employment and professional entry into elite circles
Epstein began teaching physics and mathematics at the Dalton School in Manhattan in 1974, a private school known for enrolling the children of wealthy families, despite having no university degree.
Former students later recounted inappropriate behaviour from Epstein during that period. He attended high school parties and showed particular interest in young girls, though no formal charges were filed.
During a 1976 parent meeting, his intelligence caught the attention of a student’s father, who introduced him to Alan “Ace” Greenberg, the chief executive officer of Bear Stearns, who was also a parent at the school.
After the 1975-1976 academic year, Epstein’s employment was terminated following an assessment showing no improvement in his teaching performance. Shortly afterwards, he joined Bear Stearns.
Establishing the Underage Prostitution Network
In the 1990s, Epstein relocated his business operations to the island of Saint Thomas to benefit from tax exemptions. He purchased the nearby private island “Little Saint James”, where he spent most of his time. He attempted to cultivate a favourable reputation in the United States Virgin Islands through generous donations to government officials, educational institutions, and local companies. This effort failed, as his negative reputation was already widespread.
He later bought another island known as “Great Saint James”. At the same time, he owned the largest private residence in Manhattan, in addition to properties in Palm Beach, Paris, and New Mexico.
Throughout those years, multiple media reports highlighted aspects of his activities and private life. Some reports pointed to a surveillance system inside his Manhattan residence used to record the behaviour of certain visitors for blackmail. Epstein also kept detailed flight logs of his private jet, which became known locally as the “Lolita Express”, referencing Vladimir Nabokov’s novel about a middle-aged man obsessed with a young girl.
These flight logs included the names of prominent political and public figures, including Bill Clinton, Donald Trump, lawyer Alan Dershowitz, and Prince Andrew, Duke of York.
Beginning of the Investigations
From his Palm Beach home, purchased in 1990, local police began investigating Epstein after neighbours reported the frequent presence of underage girls at his residence.
One of the complaints came from a woman stating that her 14-year-old stepdaughter had been assaulted by a wealthy man named “Jeff”. This triggered a wider investigation involving the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
By the time federal prosecutor Alexander Acosta prepared the case, the number of allegations against Epstein had reached around forty, according to official case documents.
Police officers immediately noticed Epstein’s influence and the fear that caused many girls to refuse to testify. Authorities worked secretly for years, waiting for the right time to search his home and arrest him.
Investigators felt they were being watched constantly. They found their trash being searched as well, forcing the team to change its strategy and data-handling methods to catch Epstein.
In 2005, United States authorities charged him with sexually exploiting a minor under the age of fourteen and “soliciting unlawful services” from dozens of underage girls at his Florida home.
Although many girls testified against Epstein and his associates, the court only confirmed one assault in 2008. He was charged with “solicitation of prostitution” and received a 13-month sentence after reaching a plea deal that protected him from further prosecution.
Under the agreement, Epstein admitted arranging encounters between his associates and underage girls for prostitution. He received privileged conditions in prison, including being allowed to leave for several hours a day.
Acosta, who approved the plea deal as Florida’s federal prosecutor, later resigned as Secretary of Labour in the Trump administration after renewed accusations against Epstein. He was criticised for leniency at a time when Epstein could have been stopped earlier.
Since 2008, Epstein has been listed as a level-three sex offender in New York, a permanent category indicating a high likelihood of reoffending. Despite his conviction, his assets and wealth remained untouched.
Second Arrest
The case resurfaced after the Miami Herald published an exposé highlighting Epstein’s victims and those who helped reduce his earlier sentence, including Acosta. The paper reported around eighty potential survivors of sexual abuse committed by Epstein or his associates.
This investigation led to reopening the case. Federal prosecutors resumed monitoring Epstein and uncovered an active prostitution network. He was arrested at Teterboro Airport in New Jersey on July 6, 2019, and held without bail.
Two days later, he was charged with sexually exploiting minors and conspiracy to engage in sex trafficking of minors, crimes carrying potential sentences of up to forty-five years. According to court documents, Epstein was trafficking underage girls, subjecting them to sexual slavery, and providing them to wealthy public figures from around the world.
Epstein’s island was described in the federal complaint as “the perfect hideout and sanctuary for trafficking underage girls, practising sexual slavery, and abusing children”.
The documents also stated that Epstein and his associates sought to evade detection by authorities in the U.S. Virgin Islands, prevent victims from fleeing, and hide from federal law-enforcement agencies. Several girls confirmed attempts to escape during transport to the island.
Following his hearing, a Manhattan court ordered his detention without bail.
Jeffrey Epstein’s Death and the Global Controversy
In July 2019, Epstein was found in his Manhattan cell with injuries indicating an attempted hanging. Less than a week later, suicide-prevention monitoring was lifted.
On 9 August, one day before his death, his cellmate was removed and not replaced. Guards failed to check on him for three consecutive hours in violation of prison protocol. Surveillance cameras outside his cell also malfunctioned.
On 10 August 201,9, Epstein was found dead in his cell with neck injuries. Due to the scope of his prostitution network and the involvement of influential individuals, some believed he had been killed to silence him. Police later declared it a suicide.
The circumstances of his death and his connections to high-profile political, legal, and economic figures fuelled numerous conspiracy theories suggesting he had been murdered despite official denials.
After his death, attention shifted to his former companion Ghislaine Maxwell. She was arrested in July 2020 on charges of helping him recruit underage girls and covering up his abuse through preparation, training, and coordination.
One of the most significant developments after his death was the release of thousands of previously sealed documents in January 2024. These documents revealed detailed accusations related to Epstein’s sex-trafficking network.
The files included the names of more than 150 individuals, including politicians, businessmen, artists, and academics, who were either personally associated with Epstein or mentioned in court records.
Mossad Agent Allegations
Due to Epstein’s Jewish background, American newspapers frequently discussed his ties to Mossad, the Israeli intelligence service, and the possibility that he had worked for them. These allegations were strengthened by his relationship with the Maxwell family, beginning with the father, Robert, and later his daughter, Ghislaine. Epstein had previously assisted Robert Maxwell during his financial collapse.
Investigative journalist Julie Brown stated that “it is not unlikely that Epstein had ties to Mossad”, highlighting similarities between the circumstances of Epstein’s death and that of Robert Maxwell in 1991, amid local speculation that both had been assassinated by Mossad, despite the official narratives of suicide for the first and accidental drowning for the second.
Former Israeli intelligence officer Ari Ben Menashe claimed in an interview with Russia Today that Epstein and Robert Maxwell were both Israeli agents, and that the entire scandal was designed to collect intelligence on high-profile individuals for Mossad and to blackmail them.
The investigative site “Drop Site” published leaked documents and emails showing that Epstein played a covert role in facilitating negotiations between Israel and Côte d’Ivoire to establish a security agreement for monitoring communications in the African state, with the involvement of former prime minister Ehud Barak. The emails also revealed that Epstein assisted in coordinating Barak’s trips to Africa.
