An Israeli military official threatened on Monday to resume aggression against Iran following the reactivation of the UN sanctions mechanism, claiming that there is an “arms race underway in the region.”
According to the Hebrew daily Maariv, the unnamed Israeli officer said: “We are monitoring everything happening across the Middle East and in Iran. Both Israel and Iran are in a constant arms race and continuous learning process.”
He added: “We are preparing for a range of scenarios and possibilities, one of which is that we may have to act against Iran once again.” The official alleged that “Iran suffered a heavy blow in the last confrontation and fully understands the scale of the damage inflicted on it and the capabilities of the Israeli army.”
The June War: Israeli and US Aggression Against Iran
In a surprise escalation, the Israeli occupation army — backed by the United States — launched a war on Iran on 13 June, lasting 12 days. The assault targeted military and nuclear sites, civilian infrastructure, and included the assassination of senior commanders and nuclear scientists.
According to Iranian authorities, the aggression resulted in 606 martyrs and 5,332 wounded.
Tehran responded with powerful strikes on Israeli military and intelligence facilities using ballistic missiles and drones. The retaliation caused unprecedented destruction and panic within the occupation entity, leaving 28 dead and 3,238 injured, according to Israel’s Ministry of Health.
Later, the United States bombed nuclear facilities in Iran, prompting Tehran to respond by striking the American Al-Udeid airbase in Qatar. Washington then announced on 24 June a ceasefire between the parties.
UN Sanctions Reimposed on Iran
On Sunday, the UN Security Council reimposed sanctions on Iran after the expiry of the so-called “snapback mechanism.” This move came after the failure of renewed negotiations over Tehran’s nuclear programme.
The reinstatement of sanctions followed the decision of the European troika — France, Britain, and Germany — which on 28 August activated the snapback clause in the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).
At that time, the Europeans gave Iran a 30-day deadline, accusing Tehran of violating its nuclear commitments, after the United States had already unilaterally withdrawn from the deal.
Iran, Russia, and China Reject the Move
Iran rejected the snapback activation outright. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi declared that the European states had lost their legal standing as parties to the nuclear deal and therefore had “no legal basis” to trigger the mechanism.
Russia and China supported Iran’s position, sending a joint letter to the UN Security Council denouncing the European step as “illegal” and “illogical.”
