An Iranian official revealed to Reuters that most of the highly enriched uranium stored at Iran’s Fordow nuclear facility was secretly moved to an undisclosed location before the U.S. airstrike—a detail that adds new complexity to the unfolding confrontation.
In the early hours of Saturday, the United States launched a swift and precise military strike targeting multiple strategic sites inside Iran, including the Fordow nuclear facility, widely regarded as one of the most sensitive and fortified uranium enrichment sites in the country.
According to military analysts, the decision to target Fordow—located deep beneath a mountain—reflects advanced U.S. intelligence and technological capabilities. For Iran, Fordow has long been seen as a last line of defense, designed to protect its nuclear infrastructure from foreign attacks.
Two senior Pentagon officials confirmed to CBS News that three U.S. B-2 Spirit stealth bombers were used in the strike. Each aircraft was armed with two GBU-57 Massive Ordnance Penetrators (MOPs)—14-ton, bunker-busting bombs engineered specifically to penetrate heavily fortified underground targets. Due to their massive size and weight, these bombs can only be deployed by B-2 bombers.
The Fordow facility, located under a mountain and buried nearly 300 feet (more than 90 meters) deep, is surrounded by dense air defense systems. Despite its natural protection, the MOP bombs were considered the only effective option capable of potentially neutralising the site.
This military operation marks a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict between Washington and Tehran, raising urgent questions about the future of Iran’s nuclear program and the next phase of Iran’s strategic response.
With key nuclear material reportedly relocated in advance, the strike—though technically impressive—may not have achieved full tactical success. However, it sends a powerful message about U.S. military reach and its willingness to act decisively, especially amid growing tensions with both Iran and its allies across the region.
