Israeli military and political circles now anticipate that the United States will formally join Israel’s ongoing attacks on Iran, which began early last Friday, according to reports from Hebrew-language media.
The Israeli Public Broadcasting Corporation (KAN) quoted a senior Israeli official stating that the prevailing estimate in Tel Aviv is that President Donald Trump is likely to join the strikes against Iran.
“Trump will want to be remembered as someone who participated, not as someone who stood by,” the official said — suggesting that Washington’s entry into the war is not just strategic, but personal and political.
The official also warned that without U.S. involvement, Israel’s military capabilities would be too limited to cause significant damage to Iran’s fortified Fordow nuclear facility — a central target in the current Israeli war calculus.
Fordow: The Primary Target of Joint Aggression
Israel’s Channel 13 confirmed that military preparations are underway for a potential strike on Fordow — one of Iran’s most secure and strategically vital nuclear enrichment sites.
Israeli officials reiterated that Fordow is on the Israeli Defense Forces’ (IDF) target bank, but that the effectiveness of any assault would depend on U.S. involvement due to the technical challenges of striking such a heavily fortified site.
The Fordow facility, buried 90 metres deep inside a mountain, is considered impervious to standard munitions. Israeli newspaper Israel Hayom underscored the need for the U.S. B-2 stealth bomber, the only aircraft in the Western arsenal capable of penetrating such hardened underground sites.
“The War Won’t End Without Fordow”
Israel’s National Security Council Chief, Tzachi Hanegbi, declared on Tuesday:
“We will not end this war without targeting Fordow.”
This reflects the strategic obsession within Israel’s war cabinet with delivering a symbolic and physical blow to Iran’s nuclear programme.
Israel Hayom also reported that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer are in direct communication with President Trump, discussing plans and coordination related to Iran.
U.S. Warships Signal Escalation
Fueling speculation of direct U.S. involvement, unnamed Israeli officials told local media that the movement of American warships into the region is a sign that Trump has already joined the war in practice, even if not yet formally declared.
The Wall Street Journal corroborated this by revealing that a third U.S. destroyer has entered the eastern Mediterranean, tasked with intercepting Iranian missile threats aimed at Israel. Meanwhile, a second aircraft carrier group is en route to the Arabian Sea — a classic signal of imminent escalation.
The Assault That Sparked the Fire
With implicit support from Washington, Israel launched a massive offensive on Iran at dawn on Friday. The operation involved dozens of fighter jets targeting nuclear sites, missile bases, and assassinating senior Iranian military leaders and nuclear scientists.
According to official Iranian reports, the attacks left 224 people dead and 1,277 injured — including civilians and high-ranking defence figures.
That same evening, Iran responded forcefully with 11 successive waves of ballistic missile and drone attacks, striking military and logistical targets inside occupied Palestine. According to Israeli government sources, these counterstrikes killed 24 individuals and injured 592, in addition to inflicting considerable material damage.
