The Prime Minister of Malaysia, Anwar Ibrahim, has renewed his call for the expulsion of the occupying state from the United Nations.
In a joint press conference held in Cairo with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, Prime Minister Ibrahim announced that Malaysia is drafting a resolution proposal to remove Israel from the UN. This step, he explained, is due to Israel’s refusal to allow humanitarian aid access and the ongoing genocide in Gaza.
Anwar emphasized that the only viable option for dealing with a state that defies UN Security Council and General Assembly resolutions is its expulsion from the United Nations.
He added, “We are fully aware of the complexities of the situation, but our priority is a ceasefire and establishing peace. The killing of children and women cannot continue unchecked.”
Last week, Prime Minister Ibrahim stated that Malaysia is preparing a draft resolution to be presented to the UN General Assembly. The resolution proposes Israel’s expulsion from the UN if it continues violating international laws concerning Palestine.
This announcement came in a statement to the Malaysian parliament regarding the draft, as reported by the Malaysian National News Agency, Bernama.
Ibrahim mentioned that Malaysia has joined the “core group” responsible for drafting the resolution. This proposal seeks an advisory opinion from the International Court of Justice on Israel’s obligations to permit UN humanitarian organizations’ activities.
If accepted by the UN General Assembly, the resolution could pave the way for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) to continue delivering essential aid to Palestinians in Gaza, the West Bank, Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria.
He highlighted that discussions surrounding the draft are ongoing and that the proposal will soon be submitted to the UN General Assembly.
Malaysia has consistently taken a strong stance in support of the Palestinian people in the current Gaza conflict, condemning the Israeli occupation forces’ attacks on Palestinian civilians. Since the escalation began, the Malaysian government has issued several official statements denouncing what it describes as the “brutal aggression” against Palestinians, calling on the international community to take urgent action to stop the violence.
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim expressed deep condemnation of these actions, affirming Malaysia’s commitment to standing alongside the Palestinian people. He stressed the importance of respecting their legitimate rights and called for an immediate halt to the attacks. Additionally, Malaysia is actively coordinating efforts with other Muslim countries and international organizations to deliver humanitarian aid to those affected in Gaza. The nation urges concrete steps to protect Palestinians and promote their cause on the global stage.
