The European Court said in a statement on its website that the criminal conviction against an Austrian woman made insulting statements to the Prophet, peace, and blessings be upon him, and fined her 480 euros; It is not a violation of her right to freedom of expression.
“The court found that local courts in Austria carefully balanced a woman’s right to freedom of expression with the right of others to protect their religious feelings, and maintained religious peace in Austria,” she added.
The court considered that the woman’s statements “exceeded the permissible limit in the discussion, and were classified as an offensive attack on the Messenger of Islam, as well as endangering religious peace.”
The woman, whom the court knew only as “ES”, had held seminars on Islam in 2008 and 2009 for the far-right Freedom Party, during which she spoke about the marriages of the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, and made insulting statements about the Holy Prophet.
