Trump’s Grip on Washington Shattered: How the ‘Blue Tsunami’ Turned America’s Midterms Into a Political Earthquake

Donald Trump has lost control of Congress, and the political consequences could define the final two years of his presidency.

In a sweeping electoral defeat, Democrats seized control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate in Tuesday’s US midterm elections, breaking Republican dominance in Washington and delivering what British newspapers have described as a devastating rejection of Trump’s political agenda.

But the scale of the defeat extends far beyond Congress. Republican strongholds have fallen, voters who previously backed Trump have abandoned his party, and a historic victory in Michigan has produced America’s first Muslim senator.

From The Guardian to the conservative-leaning Daily Telegraph, British newspapers have presented the results as something more consequential than an ordinary midterm setback: a political reckoning for Trump’s Make America Great Again (MAGA) movement.

For a president who has relied heavily on Republican control of Washington to advance his policies, the emergence of a Democratic-controlled Congress threatens to transform the remainder of his second term into a prolonged confrontation between the White House and Capitol Hill.

Trump Lost Congress. Could He Strike Iran Before Democrats Take Control?

The Guardian: Is This the Beginning of the End for MAGA?

For The Guardian, the election results represent far more than a temporary decline in Republican popularity.

The newspaper characterised the Democratic victories as an overwhelming public rejection of Trump’s political philosophy and a final warning to an administration whose policies have increasingly divided the American electorate.

Perhaps the clearest indication of that shift came from states traditionally regarded as Republican strongholds.

Democrats made remarkable breakthroughs in Texas, Kansas and South Carolina, territories where Republican dominance had previously appeared almost unassailable.

According to the newspaper’s analysis, these victories reflected a deeper transformation among middle-class Americans and suburban voters who have grown increasingly frustrated with political polarisation and the administration’s approach to governance.

In its editorial assessment, The Guardian argued that the results marked the beginning of a genuine erosion in the popularity of the MAGA movement.

The ballot box, it suggested, had become a direct instrument for holding Trump and his administration accountable for their record over the previous two years.

Exit polling offered a powerful explanation for the backlash.

Nearly nine in ten voters identified the rising cost of living as a crucial or major factor in their electoral decisions, with housing expenses and fuel prices contributing to widespread economic dissatisfaction.

The result was an electorate increasingly unwilling to accept political promises while struggling with the financial pressures of everyday life.

The Times: Republicans Are Losing the Voters Who Helped Elect Trump

While The Guardian focused on the political consequences, The Times examined the electoral mathematics behind what it described as a direct punishment of Trump.

The newspaper highlighted the collapse of Republican support in historically conservative areas and cited projections suggesting that Democrats could secure approximately 255 seats in the House of Representatives.

Such an outcome would represent one of the party’s strongest congressional performances since 2009.

Yet the most troubling development for Republicans was not simply the number of seats lost.

It was the changing composition of the electorate.

According to The Times, Latino voters, whose support had helped strengthen the Republican coalition, shifted noticeably away from the party.

The newspaper cited figures indicating that Republican support among Latino voters had fallen to approximately 33 per cent, compared with 40 per cent two years earlier.

It linked the decline partly to dissatisfaction with the administration’s hardline immigration enforcement policies, which have increasingly affected communities that Republicans had previously hoped to bring into their political coalition.

Younger Americans also moved decisively towards the Democrats.

The newspaper reported that approximately two-thirds of voters under the age of 45 supported Democratic candidates, reflecting a broader generational rejection of the Republican Party’s current direction.

For Republican strategists, these shifts raise a question extending well beyond the midterms: whether Trump’s political movement can retain the electoral coalition that returned him to the White House.

Trump’s Own Candidates Become Casualties of the Republican Defeat

The election also exposed the risks of transforming the Republican Party into a political organisation built around one individual.

Several candidates personally endorsed or promoted by Trump suffered defeats, including Ken Paxton in Texas and Darline Graham in South Carolina.

Graham, the sister of the late Republican senator Lindsey Graham, had been appointed to fill the vacancy left by her brother’s death, with Trump’s backing.

Their defeats reinforced concerns among traditional conservatives that the Republican Party has become increasingly dependent on Trump’s personal political identity.

For critics within the conservative movement, the distinction between the Republican Party and Trump’s MAGA organisation has become increasingly difficult to maintain.

The results now raise uncomfortable questions about the electoral consequences of loyalty-driven candidate selection, particularly in states where Republicans previously enjoyed substantial advantages.

The Independent: Trump Accepts Defeat, Then Threatens to Veto Congress

The contrast between Trump’s public acceptance of the election results and his subsequent behaviour drew particular attention from The Independent.

Following the Democratic victories, Trump indicated that he was prepared to accept the outcome and work with the incoming congressional leadership.

Yet his social media activity suggested that cooperation might be limited.

The president published an image of his familiar red cap bearing a single word: VETO.

The message was widely interpreted as a warning that Trump intends to use his presidential authority to block legislation passed by the new Democratic majorities.

The White House followed with an equally defiant statement reminding Americans that Trump remained their president.

Although Democrats have secured control of Congress, Trump retains significant executive powers, including the ability to veto legislation.

The emerging confrontation could therefore produce prolonged legislative deadlock, with Democrats attempting to reverse or constrain administration policies while Trump seeks to protect his political agenda.

A Historic Muslim Victory in Michigan

Among the election’s most remarkable developments was the victory of Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan.

The Democratic candidate defeated Republican Mike Rogers to become the first Muslim elected to the United States Senate, marking a historic breakthrough for Muslim political representation in America.

British newspaper The Daily Mail highlighted the significance of his victory in a major swing state, interpreting the result as evidence of the growing political influence of minority communities.

El-Sayed’s success also challenged the effectiveness of political messaging that has relied heavily on immigration fears and hostility towards Muslim communities.

The Financial Times gave particular attention to his victory, describing it as a historic moment and a potential generational shift in American politics.

El-Sayed campaigned on a progressive platform that placed universal healthcare at the centre of his political programme, offering voters an alternative to the Republican agenda.

His opponent, Mike Rogers, enjoyed substantial backing from Republican political organisations and powerful financial interests.

The Michigan contest attracted extraordinary campaign expenditure, with hundreds of millions of dollars flowing through candidates, political organisations and outside groups.

Despite that financial mobilisation, El-Sayed prevailed.

The Financial Times interpreted Rogers’ defeat as evidence that independent voters were increasingly rejecting campaigns built around fear and Islamophobia.

For Muslim Americans, the result carries particular significance.

A candidate whose religious identity became part of the political debate has secured a seat in one of the country’s most powerful legislative institutions.

The victory also demonstrates that the political influence of American Muslim communities is becoming increasingly difficult to dismiss, particularly in competitive states where relatively small shifts in voter support can determine national outcomes.

The newspaper also reported growing tensions among younger Republican leaders, some of whom expressed a deep sense of betrayal over Trump’s policies and their consequences for the party’s electoral prospects.

The Telegraph: Trump’s War With Iran Has Become a Domestic Political Liability

The conservative-leaning Daily Telegraph delivered one of the harshest assessments of the Republican defeat.

The newspaper described the election as a personal political disaster for Trump and examined the role of his administration’s foreign policy in driving domestic economic dissatisfaction.

Central to that assessment was the war with Iran.

According to the newspaper, the conflict and resulting disruption to international shipping routes contributed to sharp increases in fuel prices, intensifying the cost-of-living pressures facing American households.

The consequences were felt well beyond the immediate military confrontation.

Higher energy prices added to household expenses, placing further pressure on voters already struggling with housing costs and inflation.

The newspaper argued that these economic consequences helped turn even traditionally conservative voters against candidates associated with Trump.

For an administration that has repeatedly presented its foreign policy as an expression of American strength, the election exposed the domestic political costs of military confrontation abroad.

The implications are particularly serious for Washington’s Middle East strategy.

With Democrats preparing to control both chambers of Congress, decisions concerning military expenditure, foreign intervention and the administration’s approach towards Iran could face substantially greater scrutiny.

The BBC: A Democratic Congress Could Turn Trump’s Final Two Years Into a Political Battle

The BBC focused on what happens after the electoral celebrations end.

Democratic control of both chambers gives the opposition substantial powers to investigate the administration, scrutinise government expenditure and challenge the White House’s legislative priorities.

According to the broadcaster’s assessment, Democrats are expected to use their congressional majorities to launch wide-ranging investigations into the administration’s domestic and foreign policies.

Sensitive judicial and administrative appointments could also face significant obstacles, particularly through the Senate’s confirmation powers.

Federal budgets may become another major point of confrontation.

Democrats could use their legislative authority to challenge spending priorities, demand greater oversight and restrict funding for policies they oppose.

For Trump, the consequences could be severe.

Although the presidency retains extensive executive authority, control of Congress provides Democrats with institutional mechanisms to constrain the administration’s agenda.

The coming two years may therefore be defined less by legislative cooperation than by investigations, veto threats, budget negotiations and political confrontation.

Financial Markets Welcome the Democratic Victory

The election results were also felt immediately in international financial markets.

As the scale of the Democratic victory became clear, the US dollar weakened against the British pound, while London’s stock market recorded gains.

The Financial Times linked the positive market reaction to expectations that Democratic control of Congress could impose stronger checks on the administration’s economic decision-making.

Investors, according to the newspaper’s analysis, appeared encouraged by the prospect of greater scrutiny over policies that had contributed to economic uncertainty.

Particular attention was directed towards Trump’s approach to international trade and financial institutions.

A Democratic-controlled Congress could complicate efforts to advance controversial tariff policies while increasing political oversight of the administration’s relationship with independent institutions such as the Federal Reserve.

The emerging political balance does not eliminate economic uncertainty.

However, it introduces a new set of constraints on an administration whose unpredictable decisions have repeatedly unsettled international markets.

Europe Sees an Opportunity to Restrain Washington’s Foreign Policy

The political consequences of the election extend beyond the United States.

European leaders responded to the Democratic victory with expressions of cautious optimism, particularly concerning trade relations and the possibility of reducing international tensions.

British Prime Minister Andy Burnham welcomed the results as an opportunity to pursue an end to the conflict in the Middle East and restore safe navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.

The waterway has become a central concern for international energy markets because of the war involving Iran and the disruption of regional shipping.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez also welcomed the election results, describing the Democratic victory as a rejection of hatred and exclusionary political policies.

Within the European Parliament, the outcome was viewed as an opportunity to establish a calmer and more constructive relationship with Washington.

For European governments frequently confronted by disagreements with Trump’s administration, Democratic control of Congress may provide additional channels for challenging or moderating American policies.

Nevertheless, Trump’s continued control of the presidency means that any change in Washington’s international behaviour will depend on the balance between congressional pressure and executive authority.

Abdul El-Sayed’s Confrontation With Sky News Sparks a British Media Backlash

While El-Sayed’s victory made history, an exchange with a British journalist attracted a separate controversy.

On election day, the Michigan Democrat became involved in a heated confrontation with Sky News correspondent James Matthews, who attempted to question him.

El-Sayed declined to engage with the journalist, pointing out that Matthews was British and was not registered to vote in Michigan.

He then challenged the relevance of seeking support from an audience outside his constituency.

“How many votes do you think I want to get in the United Kingdom? Zero,” El-Sayed told the correspondent.

When Matthews continued attempting to question him, El-Sayed placed his hands on the journalist’s shoulders and asked him to stop following him.

The exchange prompted criticism from prominent British media figures.

Broadcaster Piers Morgan described El-Sayed’s conduct as patronising and pathetic, arguing that the senator-elect should show greater respect towards Britain and its journalists.

Sky News correspondent Alex Crawford also defended Matthews, emphasising that American elections carry consequences far beyond the country’s borders and are therefore legitimate subjects of international journalistic scrutiny.

The confrontation added another dimension to the British media’s coverage of a historic election.

For El-Sayed, the controversy unfolded alongside a political achievement of considerable significance: becoming the first Muslim elected to the US Senate at a time when American voters had delivered a decisive rejection of the Republican administration’s agenda.
