Trump’s Midterm Reckoning: Democrats Seize Congress as Iran War and Economic Anger Fuel Backlash

Donald Trump urged Americans to vote in the midterm elections as though his own name were on the ballot. Millions appear to have taken him at his word, delivering a devastating electoral defeat to the US president as Democrats captured control of Congress in a sweeping rejection of his administration.

The Democratic Party secured a Senate majority and was projected to take control of the House of Representatives, breaking Republican dominance in Washington and recording remarkable victories in states that had long been considered firmly conservative.

From Texas and South Carolina to Ohio and Kansas, Republican strongholds that overwhelmingly backed Trump just two years ago turned against his party.

But beyond the electoral numbers lies a deeper political problem for the White House: mounting public anger over the cost of living, Trump’s handling of the economy and his decision to launch a war against Iran in February.

The military confrontation sent petrol prices sharply higher, adding to the financial pressures facing American households. Poll after poll indicated that voters were increasingly frustrated with rising expenses and dissatisfied with the administration’s response.

The result was an electoral backlash that extended far beyond the traditional battleground states, raising serious questions about Trump’s ability to maintain political support during the remainder of his presidency.

Republican Strongholds Fall as Democrats Rewrite the Electoral Map

Some of the night’s most remarkable Democratic victories came in states where Republican dominance had appeared almost impossible to challenge.

In Kansas, Adam Hamilton, a megachurch pastor, became the first Democrat to win a US Senate seat from the state since the Great Depression nearly a century ago.

In Ohio, former Democratic senator Sherrod Brown reclaimed a Senate seat previously held by Vice President JD Vance, defeating Republican Jon Husted.

The outcome was particularly striking given that Trump had carried Ohio by more than 10 percentage points in the 2024 presidential election.

Texas delivered another major setback for Republicans.

Democratic state representative James Talarico defeated Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton despite a barrage of outside campaign spending.

Paxton, whose political career has been overshadowed by scandals and controversies, had received Trump’s endorsement.

The result represented a dramatic reversal in a state where Trump had also secured a double-digit victory in 2024.

South Carolina produced an equally unexpected outcome.

Annie Andrews, a paediatrician running as a Democrat, defeated Republican Senator Darline Graham, who had been appointed to the Senate following the death of her brother, longtime Republican senator Lindsey Graham.

Trump had won South Carolina by almost 18 percentage points just two years earlier.

The defeats of Paxton and Graham were especially damaging for the president because he had personally backed both candidates over more established Republican alternatives, despite concerns about their political weaknesses.

Trump Campaigned for More Than 20 Rallies. His Candidates Still Lost.

The president had invested considerable political capital in preventing a Democratic takeover of Congress.

During the closing stages of the campaign, Trump held more than 20 rallies, campaigning heavily for Paxton, Graham and Ohio’s Jon Husted.

His message to Republican voters was explicit: they should approach the elections as though he himself were running.

Yet the strategy failed to prevent major Republican losses.

As the scale of the Democratic victories became apparent, Trump attempted to distance himself from the outcome.

“I wasn’t on the Ballot and if I was, we would have won IN A LANDSLIDE!” he wrote on social media.

The response reflected the political contradiction facing the president. Having encouraged supporters to treat the midterms as a personal referendum on his leadership, Trump was now confronting an election in which many voters appeared to have done precisely that, with results deeply unfavourable to his party.

Democrats Take the Senate as Republican Losses Spread to the House

Democrats flipped six Republican-held Senate seats, enough to secure a majority even if the party failed to retain its seats in the closely contested states of Michigan and Minnesota.

Their gains in the House of Representatives were also substantial.

Democratic candidates captured at least eight Republican-held seats in states including Kentucky, New Jersey and North Carolina.

More significantly, Democrats demonstrated unexpected strength in congressional districts where Republicans had previously enjoyed comfortable electoral advantages.

Although many individual House races remained uncalled as counting continued, the emerging results pointed towards Democratic control of the chamber.

The Republican setbacks extended beyond Congress.

In Texas, three-term Republican Governor Greg Abbott was defeated by Democrat Gina Hinojosa, marking another major political reversal in one of America’s most reliably conservative states.

Democrats also captured governorships in Iowa and Ohio, two states where conservative candidates have traditionally enjoyed strong electoral support.

Together, the results suggested that the backlash against Trump’s administration was not confined to individual candidates or isolated local contests.

It was unfolding across multiple levels of American government.

‘A Rebuke to Trump’: Democrats Celebrate the President’s Defeat

Democratic leaders interpreted the election results as a direct rejection of Trump’s presidency.

In Georgia, incumbent Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff, who was projected to win re-election, delivered a sharply critical assessment of the president.

“In sweeping and decisive victories, the American people have rebuked the depravity, corruption and incompetence of the man named President Donald J. Trump,” Ossoff told supporters.

Even in states where Republicans managed to retain their seats, the results revealed a substantial erosion of their electoral advantage.

In Florida, Republican Senator Ashley Moody defeated Democrat Angie Nixon, but her lead stood at only approximately three percentage points, according to vote totals compiled by Reuters and USA Today.

That represented a striking narrowing of the Republican advantage in a state Trump had carried by 13 percentage points in 2024.

Democrats also successfully defended three Florida congressional districts whose boundaries Republican lawmakers had redrawn earlier in the year.

All three districts had supported Trump by margins of at least nine percentage points.

The victories demonstrated that Democratic gains were reaching constituencies previously considered favourable to Republicans, despite efforts to reshape the electoral map.

The Iran War, Rising Prices and the Growing Demand to Restrain Trump

Although midterm elections are traditionally viewed as referendums on the sitting president, Trump’s dominance of American political life made the 2026 contest particularly personal.

His administration’s economic record and the consequences of the war against Iran became central issues for voters.

The February military confrontation had sharply increased petrol prices, intensifying concerns about household expenses at a time when many Americans were already struggling with the cost of living.

The extent of public dissatisfaction was reflected in nationwide exit polling conducted by SSRS on behalf of a consortium of American media organisations, including major television networks and the Associated Press.

The findings revealed widespread frustration with the direction of the country.

Half of voters said they viewed the midterm elections as an opportunity to rebuke Trump.

Approximately 75 per cent described themselves as either angry or dissatisfied with the direction in which the United States was heading.

Perhaps most consequentially for the White House, 70 per cent said they wanted Congress to impose greater checks and balances on the president.

That demand carries particular political significance now that Democrats have secured control of the Senate and are positioned to command the House of Representatives.

The election results threaten to dismantle the Republican congressional dominance that ivf Trump pursue his domestic and foreign policy agenda with fewer legislative obstacles.

For a president who put his personal political authority at the centre of the midterm campaign, voters’ message was hard to dismiss.

The election Trump wanted Americans to treat as a vote on his leadership has instead delivered one of the most serious electoral setbacks of his second presidency.
