Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf mocked US President Donald Trump by publishing a graphic carrying the phrase “Make America Hungry Again”, a play on Trump’s well-known slogan, “Make America Great Again”.
Qalibaf posted the response on X, formerly Twitter, on Monday after Trump shared a Newsmax report on his Truth Social platform that attributed the statement, “We are hungry and cannot survive”, to the Iranian parliament speaker.
Qalibaf’s graphic, titled “Make America Hungry Again”, included figures relating to hunger and food insecurity in the United States, without mentioning Trump by name.
“You cannot cover up your defeats with baseless claims,” Qalibaf wrote in the post.
Tensions Escalate Between Washington and Tehran
The exchange comes amid escalating tensions between Washington and Tehran.
On Friday, Trump threatened to impose the harshest economic sanctions on Iran and called on other countries, including China, to increase pressure on Tehran.
The US president also warned that countries providing any form of support to Iran would face “severe” economic consequences.
On 28 February, the United States and Israel began attacks on Iran. Tehran responded with attacks targeting Israel and what it said were US targets in the region, before a ceasefire agreement was reached in April.
On 18 June, Washington and Tehran signed a memorandum of understanding concerning freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. Its implementation later stalled because of disagreements over security in the strait.
Between 8 and 24 July, the United States resumed attacks on Iran. Tehran responded by targeting what it described as “US military facilities and equipment” in several Arab countries.
