US President Donald Trump said on Monday that he would give Iran a “final chance” to reach an agreement with the United States, confirming that he had once again cancelled planned military strikes to allow negotiations to resume at the request of Washington’s Gulf allies.
Speaking to reporters from the Oval Office, Trump said “a number of countries called, and all of them asked that this final chance be given”.
He added that he wanted to “give Iran every final opportunity before bringing it down”, referring to the possibility of resorting to military action.
Strait of Hormuz Reopening Described as First Phase
Trump predicted that negotiations would move “quickly”, saying the full reopening of the Strait of Hormuz could take place by Tuesday.
He described the reopening as the “first phase” of a potential agreement.
The next phase, he said, would involve Iran’s nuclear disarmament, which he acknowledged “will take some time”.
Trump argued that reaching an agreement was “not overly complicated”, despite the challenges facing his administration in ending a crisis that has continued for months.
Trump Accuses Iran of Deception
In a related post on Truth Social, Trump attacked the Iranian leadership, accusing it of being “unbelievably deceptive”.
He said Iranian officials request meetings and then publicly deny that any negotiations are taking place, while maintaining that they communicate only with Oman.
Trump also claimed that the Strait of Hormuz was “already under complete control” of the US Navy through what he described as the “United States steel wall”.
“Nothing reaches Iran unless we want it to, and nothing will be allowed through to it unless an agreement is reached or complete surrender is achieved,” he said.
Trump confirmed that Washington was holding talks aimed at finding a solution with Tehran, despite Iran’s denials, and repeated his position that Iran would “never possess a nuclear weapon”.
