Iranian First Vice President Mohammad Reza Aref said on Saturday that his country had prepared for the “worst-case scenarios” it could face over the next two years.
The semi-official Fars News Agency reported that Aref made the remarks while discussing Iran’s preparations for a range of potential developments.
Aref said that, due to public cohesion and the current stability of markets, there were no problems with the supply of goods.
“The government has developed the necessary plans to confront all possible adverse scenarios over the next two years, and maintaining the comfort and stability of citizens will remain the primary objective,” he said.
Reports of Possible US Strikes on Iranian Energy Sites
Earlier, ABC News cited US officials as saying that President Donald Trump was considering extensive strikes on energy targets in Iran that could begin over the weekend.
The officials said planning for potential attacks on Iran was taking place on a broad scale, although the plans remained subject to change. They added that US Central Command had previously prepared plans for a two-week air campaign against Iran.
According to the network, some US officials believe that a shorter and more intense strike could be more effective in breaking the deadlock in negotiations.
The officials also said that potential US strikes against Iran had been discussed with Israeli officials.
ABC News cited a source as saying it remained unclear whether Israel would participate directly in any potential operation against Iran.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said Iran would continue to “pay the price” until it returned to the negotiating table in a manner Trump considered meaningful.
