The Israeli Strike on Iran: Has the 45-Year Delayed War Finally Begun?

Tehran – In a dangerous escalation that could reshape the dynamics of the Middle East conflict, Israel launched a series of coordinated airstrikes early Friday morning targeting sensitive nuclear and military sites deep inside Iran, including Tehran and Isfahan Province.

The assault—carried out using fighter jets and long-range missiles—struck critical locations such as the Natanz nuclear facility, key Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) bases, and heavily fortified military compounds.

The strikes resulted in the assassination of several senior military commanders, including:

  • Major General Mohammad Bagheri (Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces),
  • Major General Hossein Salami (Commander of the IRGC),
  • Major General Gholam Ali Rashid (Commander of Khatam al-Anbiya Central Command),
  • Brigadier General Amir Ali Hajizadeh (Commander of the IRGC Aerospace Force),
alongside a number of prominent Iranian nuclear scientists.

Diplomacy in Ruins

The surprise Israeli offensive came at a time of extreme geopolitical sensitivity—less than 48 hours before the scheduled sixth round of nuclear negotiations between Tehran and Washington in Muscat. The international community had pinned hopes on this meeting as a step toward reviving the stalled nuclear agreement.

However, the attack has dramatically shifted the diplomatic landscape. Iran swiftly announced the collapse of talks, questioning the viability of any negotiations under such hostile circumstances.

Although Iranian officials stated there was no radioactive leakage from the targeted facilities beyond their perimeters, the Israeli strikes also hit civilian neighbourhoods near military zones, resulting in civilian casualties. This humanitarian cost has further ignited public anger across Iran.

In response, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei issued a series of emergency military appointments:

  • Major General Mohammad Pakpour was named the new IRGC Commander,
  • Major General Ali Shadmani was appointed head of the Khatam al-Anbiya Central Command,
  • Major General Abdolrahim Mousavi assumed the role of Chief of Staff.

These changes, announced on state television, reflect an immediate restructuring of Iran’s military leadership in anticipation of potential escalation.

With both Israeli and Iranian forces on high alert, fears are mounting that the region may slide into a full-scale confrontation—far beyond isolated strikes—ushering in a war whose impact could spill across borders and reshape global alliances.

Toward a Broader Confrontation

Speaking to Al Jazeera Net, international security researcher Aref Dehghandar explained that the regional equation has shifted significantly since the launch of the Palestinian operation Al-Aqsa Flood. He noted that tensions between Iran and Israel have been building for months and are now erupting into open conflict.

Dehghandar described the Israeli aggression as “an unprecedented act of war against Iranian sovereignty,” citing its deliberate targeting of civilians—including women and children—and the precision strikes that assassinated military commanders and nuclear scientists.

In his analysis, Israel’s escalation crossed Iran’s red lines, making it impossible to maintain what had been dubbed “strategic patience.” As such, a powerful and disproportionate response from Iran has become inevitable. “A rapid and unrestrained response is now certain, far beyond conventional military retaliation,” he said.

Dehghandar warned that the scale of Israeli escalation signals the entrance into a full-spectrum regional war. Iran’s likely response, he said, will surpass the “True Promise” operations (1 and 2) in both intensity and reach, as Tehran is unlikely to settle for symbolic or limited strikes.

“What sets this round of escalation apart,” he added, “is the high probability of its expansion and continuation—unlike previous flare-ups that were quickly contained through diplomatic channels.”

Prepared for Every Scenario

International relations expert Ashkan Mombeni described the Israeli attacks as more than war crimes. “These acts reflect the desperation of a collapsing Zionist regime—resorting to terrorism inside Iranian territory as a last-ditch effort to escape impending defeat.”

He added that the deliberate targeting of military leaders and top scientists reveals Israel’s systematic policy of assassination, a flagrant violation of international law and a direct threat to both regional and global security.

Mombeni further explained that Iran’s swift restructuring of its military leadership demonstrates a calculated and composed response. “This sends a clear message that the Islamic Republic is preparing for all potential outcomes.”

He concluded, “Whether or not this signals the beginning of a full-scale war, the real question is: how long can Iran remain restrained while its sovereignty is under direct assault? Rebuilding command structures and strengthening deterrence is not a choice—it’s a necessity.”

While an open war has not yet been formally declared, all signs indicate that the Islamic Republic is bracing for every possible scenario—including direct military confrontation.
