The number of US military personnel killed during the war on Iran is higher than the figure publicly announced by the Pentagon, according to The Washington Post.
The newspaper cited six US officials familiar with the Defence Department’s internal casualty data, who said the true death toll exceeded the publicly disclosed figures.
Five of the officials who provided the information said that at least four military deaths had not been included in the Pentagon’s public database.
The Pentagon released updated casualty figures in early September, saying the number of US military personnel killed or wounded since the conflict with Iran began had risen to 838.
According to figures subsequently reported by media outlets, the number of wounded personnel rose to 820 after another 26 service members were injured, while the officially reported death toll remained at 18.
The Washington Post’s reporting therefore indicates that the actual number of US military fatalities may be at least four higher than the Pentagon’s publicly listed figure.
