Trump Reignites Falklands Dispute as Israeli Oil Firm Emerges at Centre of Row

The Falkland Islands have rarely returned to the forefront of international news with such force in recent years. But recent remarks by US President Donald Trump, combined with escalating rhetoric from Argentine President Javier Milei, have revived a dispute that has largely remained dormant for 44 years and raised questions over whether another confrontation could emerge.

The dispute between Britain and Argentina over the islands dates back to 1982, when the two countries fought a bloody war that ended in a humiliating defeat for Argentina.

Trump Drops a Political Bombshell

During a television interview, Trump suggested that the United States might not assist Britain if another war were to break out with Argentina over the islands.

Trump’s position towards London came amid Britain’s refusal to participate in or support what he had sought in his war against Iran, prompting him to signal that Britain could face consequences involving one of its most strategically important overseas territories.

Trump was explicit when asked whether the US position on the Falklands could change. He said that he frequently changes his position on issues, appearing to link Washington’s future stance to the level of British defence spending expected by the United States.

Milei Escalates Pressure

Trump’s position appears to have given Argentine President Javier Milei significant encouragement to step up pressure over the islands, known in Argentina as the Malvinas.

In a speech on the previous evening, Milei said Argentina needed to recover the islands. His remarks were accompanied by legal and economic measures, as well as sanctions targeting international oil companies operating offshore in an effort to obstruct the British-backed Sea Lion project.

An Oil Prize off the Islands

The story of the offshore oil resources near the islands dates back to 2010, when British company Rockhopper Exploration discovered significant oil reserves in waters north of the Falklands.

The development was named the Sea Lion project. Located about 220 kilometres north of the islands, it is being developed by Britain’s Rockhopper and Israeli company Navitas Petroleum, which has become the project’s operator and holds a 65 per cent stake, compared with Rockhopper’s 35 per cent.

Studies indicate that the field contains around 1.7 billion barrels of oil. Current plans call for drilling to begin next year, with production scheduled to start in 2028.

Argentina Moves Against the Project

The Argentine government has rejected the project, arguing that it violates United Nations resolutions concerning the sovereignty dispute because Buenos Aires considers the islands Argentine territory under occupation.

The government has filed a case before an Argentine court seeking to halt the project on grounds related to sovereignty claims, the continental shelf and the need for authorisation from Argentine authorities on environmental grounds.

Argentina has gone further by announcing sanctions targeting companies involved in the project, while seeking to extend the measures to shareholders, directors and suppliers. It has also moved to strengthen maritime measures in the south of the country.

London Insists Its Commitment Is Absolute

British Defence Secretary Wes Streeting expressed concern over the US position and said Trump’s comments appeared to be creating momentum in Argentina’s favour regarding the islands, while stressing that Britain remained determined to retain them.

Streeting said Britain’s commitment to the Falklands was absolute and unwavering, arguing that the islanders had chosen to remain British. He was referring to the referendum held on the islands following British control.

The Falklands and the Memory of 1982

The Falklands dispute erupted into war in 1982 after Argentine forces attacked and took control of the islands in an operation described by Argentina as the recovery of territory it considers its own.

Britain treated the attack as an invasion of a British overseas territory. Days later, London dispatched a large naval task force to the South Atlantic to regain control of the islands.

The fighting lasted around 74 days and ended with the surrender of Argentine forces and the restoration of British control.

The war caused heavy losses on both sides. A total of 649 Argentine military personnel were killed, along with 225 British servicemen and three civilian islanders.

The conflict remained confined to the islands, and neither country formally declared war on the other. The defeat triggered a major political shock in Argentina and weakened the military government then ruling the country.

Diplomatic relations between Britain and Argentina were not restored until 1989. Argentina, however, continued to maintain that the Malvinas belong to it and incorporated that position into its constitution in 1994, defining the islands as part of Argentine territory.

Most residents of the islands are of British descent. In a 2013 referendum, they voted in favour of remaining under British sovereignty. Buenos Aires rejects that referendum as decisive, maintaining that the fundamental issue is a sovereignty dispute over territory it considers part of Argentina.
