US President Donald Trump announced the launch of a new operation in the Strait of Hormuz under the name “Freedom Project”.
Trump stated that US efforts to restore the movement of vessels through the strait would begin on Monday morning Middle East time. He claimed that the repositioning of ships is intended solely to enable the movement of individuals, companies, and countries that “have done nothing wrong” and are, in his words, victims of prevailing circumstances.
He further described the operation as a “humanitarian gesture” led by the United States in coordination with Middle Eastern countries, singling out Iran in particular.
Framing the Operation as a Goodwill Initiative
According to Trump, the move is designed to demonstrate a high level of goodwill among parties that have been engaged in intense conflict over recent months. He asserted that several countries around the world, most of which are not directly involved in the Middle East conflict, had requested US assistance in securing the safe passage of their vessels through the strait.
He added that these countries were informed that the United States would take responsibility for guiding their ships and ensuring their safe exit from the Strait of Hormuz, allowing them to resume operations without disruption.
Trump reiterated that, in what he described as the broader interest of Iran, the region, and the United States, Washington had committed to escorting these vessels safely.
Ongoing Communications with Iran
Trump also stated that US representatives are currently engaged in what he described as “very positive” discussions with Iran, suggesting that these talks could lead to outcomes beneficial to all parties involved.
