U.S. President Donald Trump hinted that Venezuela could become the “51st state” of the United States.
In a post on the American platform Truth Social on Monday evening, Trump referred to Venezuela’s 4–2 victory over Italy in the semi finals of a baseball tournament held in Miami.
He said: “Good things have been happening in Venezuela recently. I wonder what’s behind this success. Does anyone want to become the 51st state?”
Prior to the U.S. attack on Venezuela, Venezuela’s interim president Delcy Rodríguez stated in November 2025 that the United States aims to turn her country into the “51st state.”
Trump had previously stated that Canada should become the 51st state of the United States.
On January 3, the U.S. military launched an attack on Venezuela that resulted in casualties and the arrest of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, who were taken to the United States.
Trump later announced that the United States would manage Venezuela’s affairs during a transitional period and would send its companies to invest in the oil sector, without specifying a timeline.
