The Iranian Fars News Agency reported, citing a source it described as informed, that the United Arab Emirates was the source of the drone attacks targeting Riyadh and the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia.
Earlier, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps denied responsibility for the drone attacks that targeted Saudi Arabia and stated that Riyadh should search for the source of the drones launched toward its territory.
Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Defence had announced the interception and destruction of six drones over the Eastern Province and Riyadh.
Meanwhile, American officials revealed that five US Air Force refuelling aircraft were damaged while on the ground at Prince Sultan Air Base in Al Kharj near the Saudi capital Riyadh, according to the Wall Street Journal.
The officials said the aircraft were damaged during an Iranian missile strike that targeted the Saudi base in recent days. The US Central Command declined to comment on the incident.
One official stated that the refuelling aircraft sustained damage but were not completely destroyed and are currently undergoing repairs. No casualties were reported as a result of the strikes.
This brings the total number of US Air Force refuelling aircraft that have been damaged or destroyed to at least seven.
The development comes after a collision incident on Thursday between two Boeing KC-135 refuelling aircraft, which led to one of them crashing to the ground. The United States announced on Friday that all six crew members aboard the aircraft were killed.
