In a powerful move to confront the Israeli blockade on Gaza, Malaysian civil society organisations have announced plans to launch the largest maritime fleet in history aimed at breaking the siege.
Azmi Abdul Hamid, President of the Malaysian Consultative Council of Islamic Organisations (MAPIM), revealed that his communications with NGOs and humanitarian groups from across the globe have received strong international support for a 1,000-ship Freedom Flotilla bound for Gaza.
At a press conference in Kuala Lumpur, Abdul Hamid stated that while the ship Madeleine was hijacked by Israeli forces, it still succeeded in shining global attention on the genocide in Gaza and igniting momentum for broader international mobilisation.
“The message of Madeleine was clear. It exposed the scale of the crime and inspired a revival of the Freedom Flotilla movement—this time, with global backing,” he said.
A Flotilla of Conscience, Not Just Cargo
Speaking to Al Jazeera, Abdul Hamid explained that preparations are underway to dispatch 1,000 ships from all over the world, calling on the countries from which these ships originate to guarantee their protection. He confirmed that well-known global figures have already pledged their support for the initiative.
The participating organisations behind the second Freedom Flotilla outlined their key goals:
- Deliver urgent humanitarian aid to the besieged residents of Gaza.
- Challenge Israel’s violations of international law.
- Encourage worldwide civil society action to rescue humanity and mount moral and peaceful pressure against the illegal occupation.
While MAPIM has not disclosed the exact launch date or location, the flotilla is described as a “global uprising of conscience”, responding to the political failure to stop Israel’s starvation policies and war crimes in Gaza.
Global Momentum for Gaza
During the first preparatory meeting of the Freedom Flotilla 2, Malaysian civil society leaders praised the “Caravan of Steadfastness”—a land convoy that recently departed Tunisia en route to Gaza—as an example of the rising momentum to break the siege, particularly as international institutions continue to fail in stopping Israel’s crimes.
A joint statement signed by dozens of Malaysian organisations said the 1,000-ship flotilla aims to see ships launched from every nation, gathering in a country close to Palestine before heading together toward the blockaded Gaza Strip.
The statement cited the 2010 Mavi Marmara flotilla as inspiration but asserted that this time, the scale is far greater. The international nature of the effort would compel governments to protect their citizens, creating global political pressure on Israel and its supporters.
Demands of the Freedom Flotilla:
- Immediate lifting of the Gaza blockade
- Unrestricted delivery of humanitarian aid
- International protection for the Palestinian people
- Accountability for Israeli leaders responsible for genocide and starvation tactics
MAPIM has already begun establishing a coordination secretariat and is preparing to launch a fund to support the mission as needed.
The group has also called on companies, institutions, and individuals to donate ships, safety equipment, logistical aid, and to organise solidarity marches while lobbying their governments to ensure safe passage and protection for all flotilla participants.
Malaysia’s Boycott Movement Targets Israeli-Affiliated Firms
In parallel, Malaysian organisations have called on the government to cut all ties with companies that support the Israeli occupation or are complicit in settlement activities.
Dozens of activists rallied outside the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA) headquarters in Kuala Lumpur, demanding an end to ties with Caterpillar Inc., the American company whose D9 bulldozers are used by Israeli forces to destroy Palestinian homes and infrastructure in both Gaza and the West Bank.
Dr. Mohd Nazri, head of the Boycott Israel Movement in Malaysia, told Al Jazeera that they consider any Malaysian company that deals with such firms to be complicit in Israeli genocide.
He specifically named Sime Darby, a company under Malaysia’s sovereign wealth fund, as the largest regional partner of Caterpillar in ASEAN countries.
