When Empires Fall, Islam Rises: Lessons from a History They Don’t Teach

History is filled with the ruins of empires that believed they would last forever. Rome, Persia, Byzantium, the colonial powers of Europe — all rose with pride and collapsed into dust. But amid the rise and fall of kings, crowns, and empires, Islam has endured.

Not as an empire of swords or flags, but as a civilisation of belief, resilience, and mercy.

Exclusive: They Live as Muslims – but Secretly See Themselves as the True Jews

This article explores why, when empires fall, Islam rises — and why, even today, it remains the greatest force of spiritual survival and renewal.

I. Islam Is Not an Empire — It’s a Revelation

Empires are political. Islam is divine.

Empires fall because they are built on power, wealth, and human ambition. Islam rises because it is built on tawheed (the Oneness of Allah), ‘adl (justice), and rahmah (mercy).

“Indeed, We sent down the Reminder, and indeed, We will preserve it.” (Qur’an 15:9)

The Qur’an was not preserved by armies or states. It was preserved in the hearts of believers, in the tongues of children, and in the ink of scholars across centuries.

When Baghdad fell in 1258, Islam did not end. When Spain was lost in 1492, Islam did not vanish. When the Ottoman banners were lowered in 1924, Islam was not defeated.

Because Islam is not in a palace — it is in the soul.

II. The Empires That Collapsed — and the Islam That Endured

      • The Mongol Invasion: When the Mongols sacked Baghdad, rivers ran black with the ink of burned books. Yet within two generations, the Mongols themselves embraced Islam.

      • The Crusades: Europe sent waves of armies to Palestine. Yet Salahuddin al-Ayyubi (رحمه الله) restored Jerusalem — not through genocide, but through mercy.

      • Colonialism: British, French, and Dutch empires stripped Muslims of land, wealth, and governance. Yet Islam produced anti-colonial leaders who fought with the sword of faith: ‘Umar Mukhtar in Libya, Imam Shamil in the Caucasus, the Mujahideen of Algeria.

      • The Fall of the Ottomans: Secularists thought abolishing the Caliphate would erase Islamic governance. Yet today, Islamic movements rise from Turkey to Malaysia, from Nigeria to Indonesia.

    Empires crumble. Islam regenerates.

III. Why Does Islam Survive When Others Collapse?

    1. Divine Protection: The preservation of the Qur’an, the Sunnah, and the authentic sources of Islam remains unmatched in human history.

    2. Spiritual Resilience: The Muslim ummah suffers, but it does not spiritually surrender. The heart that says “Allahu Akbar” remains unbroken, even in ruins.

    3. Moral Superiority: While empires rot from arrogance, decadence, and injustice, Islam calls always back to humility, accountability, and service to Allah.

“Say: The truth has come, and falsehood has perished. Indeed, falsehood is ever bound to perish.” (Qur’an 17:81)

IV. Today’s Empires Are Falling Too

The modern secular world is in moral decay:

        • Family breakdown

        • Political corruption

        • Economic exploitation

        • Identity crises

While they build taller towers, they hollow out their souls.

Meanwhile, from the alleys of Gaza to the classrooms of Kuala Lumpur, from the masaajid of Johannesburg to the tents of Syrian refugees, Islam still calls hearts to the One, the Eternal.

They cannot colonise a heart that belongs to Allah.

      Conclusion

Every empire thought it would be the last. Every empire believed it could erase the faith of a humble, praying people. Every empire found out: Islam is not theirs to defeat.

As the Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم said what means: “Allah will send new individuals in this religion who will uphold it.” — (Authenticated by Ahmad and Ibn Majah)

We are not a people of despair. We are the ummah that rises when others fall.

Because Islam was never just in power.
      Islam was always in truth.
